Founder & Executive Director, Cohort Sistas | Advancing racial & gender equity in doctoral education | Assistant Professor | Historian of race and medicine
14 anti-DEI bills have been passed in 12 states since 2023, shuttering DEI offices at colleges and universities across the country. Ironically, many of the public institutions that award the highest number of doctorates to Black women and other historically excluded groups — like the University of Florida, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Texas A&M University — are in states that have passed laws banning DEI offices, programs, and trainings. At every level of higher education, thousands of students now find themselves without the crucial support systems they need to navigate their degrees successfully. We’re at a critical crossroads. We can either lament the fall of DEI in higher education or take action. At Cohort Sistas, we’re leaning all the way in. As universities and companies choose to abandon their commitments to equity, we're taking the lead to provide the resources, mentorship, and community that research has shown increases doctoral retention and completion rates for women and students of color. We're determined to ensure that the reversal of policies advancing equity in higher ed doesn’t deepen the already significant racial gaps in doctoral education. Our "Together for Equity" campaign is a call to all who believe in the power of education and the importance of representation. Together, we can ensure that every scholar, no matter their background, has the support they need to succeed. Join us in this crucial work 🫱🏽🫲🏾 cohortsistas.org/together #CSTogether4Equity #CohortSistas #EquityInEducation #HigherEd #DEI #DiversityEquityInclusion
🎓 Our "Together for Equity" campaign launches today, and we need your support now more than ever. Cohort Sistas has empowered hundreds of women and gender-expansive doctoral students of color to thrive in academia through mentorship and community. But with DEI initiatives facing rollbacks, our work is even more critical. By joining us, you're standing for equity and ensuring that historically underrepresented scholars, especially Black women and nonbinary scholars, receive the support they need to succeed. 💛 Make a lasting impact — donate today at cohortsistas.org/together. #CSTogether4Equity #CohortSistas

As 2023 comes to a close, BC Voices’ thanks you for partnering with us in 2023 to launch Stand UP, Speak OUT Episode 3: Reproductive Rights, the story of how critical reproductive rights are to women’s ongoing freedom and independence. In August, BC Voices released the compelling, comprehensive and moving 28-minute historical documentary, Stand UP, Speak OUT: Reproductive Rights - Know Your Rights, chronicling American women’s 200+ years and ongoing fight for reproductive freedom. It calls on us to Stand UP and Speak OUT until every woman has bodily autonomy, the right to bear or not bear children, and can raise her children in a safe and sustainable community. Our promotion campaign included a screening at a Lush Cosmetics store in Manhattan; and two Zoom watch parties, including a discussion among four distinguished feminist scholars elucidating the race and class complexities of reproductive freedom. Three of the four short multi-generational conversations comprising Stand UP, Speak OUT: Reproductive Rights – Personal Stories were awarded Best In Social Justice Films by the NYWIFT 2023 Online Shorts Festival – Sterilization, Birth Control and Abortion. These stories from racially diverse women expose what’s changed, what’s the same, and how far all American women have to go to reach reproductive autonomy. We are reaching out to college professors and civic organizations, letting them know the short documentaries that make up SUSO Episode1: Equal Pay, Episode 2: Voting Rights and Episode 3: Reproductive Rights are available to them, free of charge, to include in courses and events. We hope the Stand UP, Speak OUT Docuseries will inspire the younger generation to join the fight for women's full equality. Coming in 2024, the next chapter in the story of the historically unprecedented lives lived by women over the past 50+ years, Stand UP, Speak OUT Episode 4: To Marry Whom We Love, or, Not At All . With new freedoms and independence since the mid-20th century, many women’s options around partnering and singlehood have expanded – to choose partners regardless of race, gender, faith, and class; to partner multiple times to find the “right” one; to create families with or without partners, without stigma; or to live full lives as single women. We invite you to help us raise the funds to produce this next chapter in our award-winning docuseries, Stand UP, Speak OUT: The Personal Politics of Women’s Rights, and, consider a tax-deductible contribution as part of your 2023 year-end charitable giving plans. With a donation of any amount, www.bcvoices.org/donate, you join us in our mission to tell the story of women's ongoing fight for full equality through historical narratives and personal storytelling, illuminating the battles, highlighting the successes, and inspiring us all to stay engaged in the continuing fight. Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We wish you peace, joy, and good health in 2024.

I am where I am today, because other women shared their knowledge and expertise freely. There's nothing more inspiring that women supporting women, because we know it's not a competition. There's room for us all to be successful. I carry a piece of each female mentor with me. Jenny Amory, taught me to negotiate prices and leverage nonprofit discounts. Kathryn A. (Katie) Wheeler taught me how to preserve authors' voices while editing. Katie Bayerl taught me how to apply a DBIE lens to my writing. Namrata Patel taught me to invest in my teams' present and futures and to make safe space for mistakes. Beth Bryant taught me how to refine my data analysis and projections. Laurie Heller taught me how to design within brand standards. Cassidy Leighton taught me so much about email accessibility. Tasha Booker M.ED taught me how to navigate the politics of organizations and leadership. To find myself now at the Trustees, surrounded by this talented sisterhood, is such a blessing.
We celebrate Women's History Month to remind everyone of the achievements of women throughout the years in our culture and society, and their significant moments in history. Women have always been an important part of The Trustees’ story—shaping the organization from its beginnings to the current day. Miss Ellen Chase and Mrs. Fanny Foster Tudor are named as the only two “Founders” in the Trustees’ 2nd Annual Report (1892), an acknowledgement of their donations of $1,000 or more in land or money. Other early supporters include Bostonians Sarah Crocker and Anna T. Phillips, Mary Sophia Walker of Waltham and Amelia Peabody, was the largest landover in the town of Dover at one point. Powisset Farm and Noanet Woodlands came to The Trustees from Ms. Peabody. Barbara J. Erickson joined The Trustees in 2012 as its first female President & CEO and in 2023, Katie Theoharides become the second female President & CEO. Today we honor the women of The Trustees. Women hold positions across the organization, from rangers to curators to ecologists to marketing and so much more. Women are represented in every area of The Trustees organization, and we couldn't be prouder of that. To all the women of The Trustees we want to say THANK YOU for your contributions and lasting impact. #TheTrustees #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenoftheTrustees #Accessibility [Description: Photo grid showing some of the women who work for The Trustees in their various roles at the organization.]

I help organizations and teams build the infrastructure for quality data insights that strengthen program impact and inform organizational strategy.
This morning I attended the annual AFP-GPC Funders Forum, during which three accomplished, local philanthropy professionals discussed their roles as grant makers and current funding priorities. Some takeaways to share: ✔Community and private foundations genuinely want to get to know their community partners! Reach out and connect with Foundation staff by attending local events or setting up a call. ✔Before going through the entire grant proposal process, talk to an officer at the foundation and/or submit a letter of intent to be sure priorities align. ✔Make sure your organization's/initiative's social media accounts are active and up to date. ✔ While the majority of grants do tend to be for program development purposes, this does not exclude general operating support allocation like staffing resources. And, if general operating support for sustainability is needed most, then let them know! I think about general operating support a lot as I work with organizations to build their evaluation and performance monitoring infrastructure across the organization, not just within a specific program. Association of Fundraising Professionals - Greater Philadelphia Chapter (AFP-GPC) #nonprofitsuccess #fundingopportunities #philanthropymatters
🚨 Last call for registration! Join AFP-GPC as we hear from local grantors on what is resonating with their strategic goals, what trends they are seeing and how they are adjusting to meet the changing demands of our communities. This event provides the opportunity to hear directly from community and private foundations to learn how they view their role as grant makers and determine strategic partnerships with organizations. Together we can discuss organizational priorities, engaging in a digital world and understanding grantors viewpoints. Following the panel discussion, each panelist will be available for breakout sessions to allow questions from attendees. This year’s panelists include Nicole Tell from BLBB Charitable, Monika Collins from Foundation for Delaware County and Laura Pitt from West Pharmaceutical Services. The event will be emceed by Monique Curry-Mims of Civic Capital. “Decades of research on economics, well-being and governance make it clear that investing in women and girls benefits everyone” “Despite the pressing need, only about 2 percent of charitable giving in the United States goes to organizations focused on women and girls, and only about half a percentage point goes to organizations focused on women of color specifically” How do we bridge this gap? And why does the gap exist in the first place? It is unlikely that we will get to the bottom of those questions anytime soon, let alone within the limited scope of this LinkedIn post. Reflecting on Melinda Gates' inspiring decision to leave the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and commit $1 billion to women's and girls' causes over the next two years, it's evident that some progress will be made. However, without collective effort from all of us, that chasm is destined to remain. Fortunately, there are incredible groups all over the world that have made it their mission to amplify the voices of women and girls within their communities. If you can, please consider donating your money or time to any of those amazing organizations. Let’s all do our part. https://lnkd.in/gs97CvDR
