Ending the week on a high note with an insightful and empowering staff training led by Dr. Joél Arvizo-Zavala, PhD, MEd, CHES. Together, we discussed strategies for enhancing employment outcomes for system-impacted individuals. A huge thank you to Dr. Joél for guiding us through engaging discussions and hands-on activities that inspire and equip us to better serve our community. Our team appreciates the opportunity to continuously grow and learn from you. #Reentry #ProfessionalDevelopment #StaffTraining #ContinuousGrowth

This week, we are featuring one of COAST's founding members and a COAST Board Member at-Large, Sofia Georgiadou, Ph.D., LPC-S, LMFT-S, NCC. We asked Dr. Georgiadou about what made her join COAST, her vision of COAST's larger mission, and what she hopes other MFTs will find by joining COAST. If her thoughts resonate with you, join COAST: https://lnkd.in/gBzCyeWc 1. What made you become a founding member of COAST? [Dr. Georgiadou] I got involved with COAST because I was eager to create a division for MFT Educators within a national organization like COAST. In researching COAST, I was drawn to its mission of supporting systemic therapy by connecting and collaborating directly with state-level organizations. Without a complex hierarchical structure and with plenty of agility to create new programming, COAST integrated the Society for the Teaching of Marriage and Family Therapy as a special Division for Educators in 2023. 2. Describe COAST's mission in a way that feels meaningful to you. [Dr. Georgiadou] The mission of COAST is to build a strong foundation of professional identity for systemic therapists by directly supporting systemic therapy students, interns, supervisors and licensed professionals in all US states. 3. What would you like future COAST members to find in COAST? [Dr. Georgiadou] I would like members to find a space where they can voice their concerns and needs as they enter and progress in the profession of systemic therapy. I would like them to be able to find and co-create programming that directly supports their expressed needs. 4. What's one good reason more MFTs should consider joining COAST? [Dr. Georgiadou] MFTs in states where MFT state chapters have dwindled or provide minimal support would particularly benefit from joining COAST. The COAST Board is concerned about many colleagues and students who enter the profession and receive minimal to no guidance and educational opportunities on the state level. COAST aims to offer systemic training and programming to support our colleagues of all licensure and education levels. #mft #systemictherapy #systemictherapists

EDIT: The OP actually has a great post discussing that it is not an either/or, good/bad between academia and industry! Thank you for sharing Kaidi W. See: https://lnkd.in/eJPAPybB ******************* Interesting perspective, but to me it suffers from a great deal of survivorship bias (https://lnkd.in/etQvWQEk) and misses a big opportunity to talk about the fact that "industry vs. academia" need not be a one or the other, all or nothing kind of choice. In research-focused (i.e., generally well-regarded) PhD programs, taking on an industry internship or opportunity, or even flirting with the idea, is probably the fastest way to be blackballed and considered irrelevant in your program. (Fortunately, this was not my own experience, but I am aware that my experience was an exception in this regard.) If you say in your interview for a PhD program that you might be interested in taking an industry position, or even that you're open to it, you'll more than likely be rejected. Industry, on the other hand, has not been so exclusive, and largely supports the idea of collaboration with academia and furthering the education of employees. The future of work and the future of academia demands integration of these two worlds. The fact peer-reviewed, published research in management journals lags years and at time decades behind what is actually happening in industry is simply not efficient or sustainable. There are career options that blend the best of both worlds, and the result for the employee (and the relevance of what they can produce) truly is the best of both worlds. Mike Merritt Richard Rosenow Ben Ostrowski, PhD Kelsie L. Colley, M.S. PhD ABD George Diabes
During my academia-to-industry transition, I asked industry PhDs if they are happy. "I'm happier than when I was in academia. I can afford to pay rent now." I asked them if they love what they do. "Honestly, if I won the lottery tomorrow, I would quit in a heartbeat." Do you derive meaning from your work? "I derive meaning from my wife and kids.” Academia has systematic issues. But so does industry. It is not a panacea for financial stability, fulfillment, work life balance, or healthy work environment. If it were, an entire industry of employment law wouldn't have existed. As you look beyond academia, do your research on the pros and cons of every industry. Gather as representative a sample as you can: happily tenured academics, unhappily tenured academics; tenure-track academics; people who have transitioned to industry and back to academia; people who started in corporate, left to do a PhD, and became a professor; people who have quit both academia and industry to run their own business. 💬 For those of you who transitioned, on a scale of 1-10, how happy are you in your day-to-day life? 👍 and repost to help a friend today 💚 Follow Kaidi W. for more #careeradvice #phdcareers #academia #9to5 #phdlife #motivation #happiness

Last night we hosted a webinar on employment and MS. We were joined by brilliant guest speakers Blanca De Dios Perez, PhD and Joanne Hurford who shared their expertise through an interactive presentation and Q&A session. If you'd like to watch the event back, you can do so on our YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/e7vwZ5rJ Some feedback from the event: "I loved that you allowed the participants to feel like we were 'in the room' rather than observing!" "Found the event really helpful and the presenters were engaging throughout. While I’m fortunate to be able to work ‘normally’ at the moment without the need for any adjustments, I found it really useful to get an awareness of the resources available if / when I need them and also feel armed with the knowledge of what I am entitled to if my employer should ever be less supportive in the future." "This event was so helpful, I really appreciate all the information I was given. I wish I had had access to this when I was first diagnosed as I had a lot of issues and challenges with my employer." We regularly host webinars on topics requested by our community to highlight issues faced by people living with MS, and to make sure that everyone has access to the necessary support and information available. Keep an eye out for our next webinar, coming soon! #MS #MultipleSclerosis #MSAwareness #MSWebinar #MSCommunity

Radical idea: measuring credential quality exclusively through metrics of job attainment and increased earnings outcomes will miss key measurements. Listening to Scott Pulsipher of Western Governors University at the Human Potential Summit, I’m hearing that enabling economical mobility is a top determining factor in individual wellbeing. I’m also hearing that “Pervasive perspectives perpetuate inequities,” especially when they are based in inaccurate or incomplete assumptions. It’s essential for perspective learners and programs to know quality measurements like earning outcomes. I think it’s also important to seek other quality metrics, such as Rick West and his colleagues at Brigham Young University who are gathering data on personal abcs family life contentment. #LERecosystem #BadgeSummit

Students deserve to leave the university armed with knowledge that allows them to negotiate an offer and navigate a benefits package with confidence. The Next Step program not only offers this content, but crosses invisible bureaucratic boundaries to do so. The Director of Human Resources for our university gets the opportunity to spend an hour with students discussing benefits and answering as many questions as she can. What a great opportunity for someone not in the classroom to have experience with students - the very reason we are all here.
