This is because far too many projects are still not setting-up the crucially important on-site and in-use stages of commissioning correctly - by getting the pre-design and design stages of the commissioning process right

NEBOSH IG 1 Mock Exam Exercise The objective of this question is: To teach the student how to prepare a presentation for delivery as induction training to new employees, visitors, and contractors. Scenario: You are a Health and Safety Supervisor for a construction company that is repairing and maintaining an oil refinery. You are assisting the contractor with the maintenance work and they are using an unsafe scaffold made of pipes. During the maintenance work, one of the workers slips and breaks his hand. The work area is covered in oil from a leak from other machinery that is under maintenance. The site supervisor gave induction training to the contractor when they arrived at the site. What information should this training include? Note: Your answer should be supported using relevant information from the scenario, where possible. 10 marks The Answer 1.   Information that should be included in the induction training: 2.   The company's health and safety policy. 3.   Fire and other emergency procedures that may be associated with oil refinery repair and maintenance operations. 4.   Details of the specific hazards in the workplace and the controls, particularly slips and controls for them, as the work will be in an oil refinery and spills are likely to occur. 5.   First aid facilities and personnel in case of a broken hand or other injury as mentioned in the scenario. 6.   Location of medical care facilities. 7.   Moving safely around the workplace such as avoiding slips and trips and how to work on the work platform. 8.   Accidents and reporting procedures such as reporting unsafe conditions. 9.   Arrangements for consultation with workers. 10. General safety rules, such as no-go areas.

Instructors do a lot of hard work even before facing their candidates. We have to attend courses too. We upskill to help keep our knowledge levels to a standard that will only be evident when used along side our course deliveries. We create lesson plans, assessment packages and create a learning environment....for all in the room. So, as we embark on another week of training and mentoring, let's take a moment to reflect on the profound privilege and responsibility we hold as instructors/ assessors. It is indeed an honour to be entrusted with the task of imparting knowledge and skills that promote safety in the workplace. Each time we step into the training room, we are not just teaching techniques or procedures; we are shaping the mindset and behaviours that can save lives. Our roles go beyond mere instruction; we are mentors, guiding others towards a deeper understanding of safety principles and practices. Let's remember the impact we have on those we train. By instilling in them a commitment to safety, we empower them to protect themselves and their colleagues, creating safer work environments for all. Our dedication to excellence in training ensures that every individual we teach leaves better equipped to navigate potential hazards with confidence. Today, I participated in a comprehensive Protective Intervention Training program facilitated by Katie Cohms from TESSA. The training encompassed both theoretical and practical approaches to address behaviors of concern, including incident management, de-escalation techniques, safety protocols, post-incident response, and recovery strategies. The training was structured into three modules: Module 1: Policy and Core De-escalation & Situation Management - This module provided an in-depth understanding of the organization's policy and core de-escalation techniques, as well as effective situation management strategies. Module 2: Core Safety - This module focused on core safety principles and practices, ensuring a safe environment for all individuals. Module 3: Safety Intervention and Scenarios - This module presented realistic scenarios, allowing participants to apply learned safety intervention techniques and develop effective response strategies. Through this training, I gained valuable knowledge and skills to effectively manage complex behaviors, prioritize safety, and respond to incidents in a professional and compassionate manner. I am confident that this training will enhance my ability to provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students.
