Thankgiving gatherings are a chance to elicit #veterans histories in addition to family history. I'm reminded of my great uncle Dean, who fought and served in the #worldwar2 battles of #iwojima and the raid on #makinisland. A typical #usmc veteran of that era, he didn't talk freely about his experiences. It was only after some of us who had served in the military, did he open up to us about his #veteranshistory. I suggest that if you are gathering with your family and close friends during this #thanksgiving, and there are #veterans among you, then use this time to elicit the stories of service. In particular, have your children (and maybe adults) put down their mobile devices and have a #veteranshistory conversation for your family history. Get them to tell the story repeatedly, so we never forget them. Here are some simple question prompts to ask them: - Did you serve in the military? What did you do? - Tell us a story about your memories of life in the military? - What prompted you to join? How old were you? - How do you see the world differently after having been in the military? - What would you tell the future generations about military service? What is Memorial Day? It's never a "happy memorial day", its NOT a celebration day, it's a day to remember ALL of our brothers and sisters in arms from different branches of the Armed Forces that paid the ultimate sacrifice for serving to our nation. This week in Military.com gives us in the article, "4 Things to Remember Every Memorial Day" by Blake Stiwell and is a must read. 1. "Memorial Day" was originally on every May 30th and named "Decoration Day". It change on May 30th, 1968 2. Memorial Day is NOT Veterans Day, so don't congratulate or thank anyone. (We are kind of sensitive to this.) 3. Every Memorial Day at 1500 (3:00pm) local time, stop everything, including driving, and take a Moment of Silence to reflect and observe the "National Moment of Remembrance". 4. "When to Raise and Lower the Flag", "On Memorial Day, the flag is brought to half-staff (at dawn, raise to full for a moment, then lower to half)". At noon, raise the flag at full-staff. An interesting Fun Fact is that Memorial Day is the only day in the year that you can see both positions. You have a flag in your house and you can't lower it? No problem, clip on a black mourning streamer in the top when it's supposed to be lowered.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗽: 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆" Every year, I see a common communication mistake that makes me cringe: people and businesses saying "Happy Memorial Day" or promoting "Happy Memorial Day sales." Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and mourning U.S. military personnel who died in service to our country. For those remembering and mourning fallen heroes, "Happy Memorial Day" can feel out of place and insensitive. Instead, consider using more appropriate phrases such as: "Wishing you a meaningful Memorial Day" "Honoring our fallen heroes this Memorial Day" "Remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice" By choosing your words carefully, you show respect and understanding for the true significance of this solemn day. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 If you're promoting a sale, focus on the event without using the phrase "Happy Memorial Day." Here are some examples: "Memorial Day Weekend Sale: Honoring Our Heroes with Special Discounts" "Memorial Day Sale: Great Deals This Weekend" "Commemorate Memorial Day with Our Exclusive Offers" This approach allows you to acknowledge the significance of the holiday while promoting your sale respectfully. Let's honor their memory appropriately. #CommunicationTips #MemorialDay #Respect #HonoringOurHeroes #MarketingTips #smithmarketinggroup
