While I appreciate the unity and shared goals among people, I am deeply disappointed by the selective and "vertical" health responses. Vaccinating children and adults, only to send them back into environments rife with other deadly diseases, is not a solution. Leaders need to realize that celebrating minimal achievements, like doing their jobs, is misguided. When did it become about our jobs rather than saving lives? The harsh truth is that vaccines alone cannot stop the rising rates of unnecessary suffering and deaths. We live in a world where multiple diseases exist, and those in the worst conditions will continue to suffer and die prematurely, despite being protected from vaccine-preventable diseases. We need to strive for a world where everyone is protected from diseases, conflicts, and severe consequences of collective actions. A world where each person can thrive in peace and prosperity. Our privilege should motivate us to make the world safer for everyone, not just ourselves.

Today, I had a productive meeting with H.E. Mr. Berk Baran, Ambassador of Turkey to the African Union , to discuss deepening Africa CDC -Turkey collaborations in public health. Turkey’s ongoing support, including $3M in COVID-19 logistics funds and crucial Mpox vaccine contributions, is instrumental in bolstering Africa’s health systems and response efforts. Together, we are building a healthier future for the continent

We are delighted to announce that Wellcome Trust has joined ICARS as a Strategic Funding Partner, supporting and strengthening our efforts to work closely with African countries in mitigating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This partnership, in collaboration with ReAct Africa, will support ICARS’ mission of partnering with Low and-Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) to develop context-specific and country-owned sustainable AMR solutions. Building on the success of previous collaborations, the support from Wellcome will further advance ICARS’ global impact on AMR. “It is critical to develop and test context-specific and cost-effective solutions to mitigate AMR which is why Wellcome are very pleased to be deepening our partnership with ICARS, supporting their research in Africa where there is a high burden of AMR. This September, there will be a spotlight on global action at the UN High-Level meeting on AMR, and partnerships like this one contribute to the development of appropriate solutions.” - Dr Timothy Jinks, Head of Interventions at Wellcome.
