“I assumed the career center would be useless.” I’ve lost count of how often I’ve heard some version of this from PhD students. If you direct a graduate program, you know how frustrating it is to hear students asking for career support and yet not taking advantage of the support you are offering. Graduate students know that most of them won’t land academic jobs, even if they want to. They know their faculty advisors aren’t going to be helpful in guiding them on the non-academic job market. They know there is a dedicated office on their campus specifically for helping students find jobs. And they don’t use it. Why? Well, sometimes grad students are right, and the career center doesn’t know how to support them effectively. However, an increasing number of career centers do have staff and resources to support PhD students. But PhD students aren’t accessing career services because they’re still wrestling with the identity shift and fear of the unknown that come with leaving academia. When leaving academia is seen as a failure, taking concrete steps to do so can feel like solidifying that failure - admitting that they aren’t good enough. At Next Draft LLC our workshops are for any PhD student, no matter what career path they plan to pursue. We meet students where they are, helping them identify their own values and learn how to use those values to guide a job search. Our PhD mentors have been through the transition to industry themselves, and provide the tailored, 1:1 support that students need to visualize themselves in diverse careers. Interested in learning more? We’d love to hear from you! You can set up a free consultation, subscribe to our newsletter, or just send a DM. PhD students: We want resources for non-academic career development! Department: Provides resources. PhD students: It’s a trap! Graduate programs, I love that more and more of you are recognizing that most PhD students go into industry jobs and are trying to provide relevant support. It can be so frustrating when you’re putting in the effort and students aren’t showing up. But here’s the thing: academic culture has been firmly against PhDs leaving academia pretty much forever. So your students likely fall into one of three groups: ✔️ Those who are convinced they’ll beat the odds and get a tenure-track role, and therefore they don’t need the resources. ✔️ Those who are afraid to openly utilize resources for non-academic career development. ✔️ Those who don’t trust their program to provide useful advice on non-academic careers. Faculty advisors and department staff need to cultivate a culture of open conversation about jobs. Make students aware of the myriad ways they can use their degree to do meaningful, intellectually engaging work. Actively lift up and praise alumni who have gone on to work in industry. Make it safe for students to ask questions about diverse career paths. And maybe… create ways for them to confidentially access career development resources from trusted sources. Bringing in an outside company like Next Draft LLC can be a great way to signal that you are ready to invest in the success of your students, and participation in our workshops and mentoring programs stays confidential. Students can explore career paths with us whether or not they’re ready to raise the topic with their advisor. Are you ready for students who actively engage with the career resources you offer? Let’s figure out how to collaborate! #RecoveringAcademics #LeavingAcademia #GradSchool #PhD #CareerServices

💼 Are Ph.D. Programs Missing the Mark on Career Preparation? Article by Joshua Doležal, Ph.D. 🎓 As academia grapples with a shrinking tenure-track job market and increasing layoffs, the path for Ph.D. graduates is shifting dramatically. With more doctoral holders transitioning to industry, the need for real-world career guidance has never been more urgent. Why the Disconnect? Ph.D. programs often emphasize preparing students for faculty roles—but only 30% of doctoral recipients secure academic careers. The rest face the challenge of translating their expertise into industry terms, where words like "stakeholders" and "deliverables" replace "research objectives." Career Coaches: Bridging the Gap Professionals like Ashley Ruba, Ali Divan, Alma.Me and others help Ph.D.s articulate their skills to match industry needs. From teaching how to frame research experience to providing technical depth for specific roles, these experts fill a critical gap in graduate education. 💡 What Can Universities Do? Invite industry alumni to share their career journeys. Develop internship programs for Ph.D. students—not just for M.A. cohorts. Partner with reputable career coaches to offer personalized support. How to Identify the Right Career Coach ✔ Look for Ph.D.s who have made the leap themselves. ✔ Examine their free content (webinars, articles, social posts). ✔ Seek testimonials or reach out to past clients. 📢 It’s Time for Change Graduate schools that invest in career readiness aren’t just supporting their students—they’re creating a legacy of alumni who feel empowered, successful, and willing to give back. 🔄 Share your thoughts: Should universities integrate career coaching into Ph.D. programs? So you've started your PhD, and you're excited to get involved with anything and everything you are allowed to get your hands on, but should you? As you navigate this academic odyssey, I can't recommend enough to lay a solid self-foundation before diving into opportunities. Here are two key considerations to establish before you become 'yes' saavy (based on what I wished I could have told first-year PhD me): 1️⃣ WHAT'S YOUR BANDWITH? Before saying 'yes' to every opportunity that comes your way, take a moment to assess your bandwidth. Understanding your capacity for additional commitments ensures you can excel in your academic pursuits while still engaging meaningfully with extracurricular activities, research projects, and professional development opportunities. Are you mentally spent? Emotionally burnt out? Physically tired? Can you *actually* give more to this opportunity and still produce quality work? 2️⃣ WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS? Beyond merely pursuing opportunities because they'll look good on your resume...delve deeper into understanding why you seek them. Are you aiming to broaden your skill set, expand your network, or contribute to your field in a specific way? Clarifying your intentions helps align opportunities with your long-term goals, ensuring each endeavor propels you closer to your aspirations in addition to communicating authentically and clearly to those you'll be pursuing this opportunity with. By answering these pillar-like questions—knowing your bandwidth and clarifying your intentions—you set the stage for a more purposeful, meaningful, and rewarding journey through your PhD experience and potential additional and valuable opportunities. Remember, it's not just about seizing opportunities to simply seize, but about making informed decisions that align with your academic and career trajectories. #PhD #PhDlife #academicjourney #professionaldevelopment
