"Improving energy efficiency in the AI industry: challenges and opportunities. (Union European in good position). 🤖The artificial intelligence (AI) industry is at a crucial crossroads where economic and societal benefits must be weighed against ecological costs. The central question is: do the benefits of AI for the energy transition outweigh its increase in energy consumption? 🎯In a recent article, we explore the challenges and opportunities of improving the energy efficiency of the AI industry. Reports show that AI has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5-10% by 2030. To achieve this goal, several measures need to be taken. 1️⃣Regulators, such as the European Parliament, are beginning to require AI systems to record their energy consumption, providing greater traceability and an incentive to improve energy efficiency. At the same time, technological advances such as new gas pedals and 3D chips offer improved performance and more efficient cooling techniques. For example, Nvidia's latest "superchip" promises to improve performance by 30 times while using 25 times less energy. 2️⃣Data center efficiency is also a priority. By using new cooling technologies and optimizing periods of use when energy is cheaper and more sustainable, data centers can reduce their carbon footprint. Reducing data usage is also a crucial aspect. By tackling "dark data" - data that is generated and stored but never used - and opting for smaller, more targeted AI models for specific tasks, energy consumption can be reduced. ⚡️In conclusion, to improve the energy efficiency of the AI industry, it's essential to strike a balance between performance, cost and carbon footprint. Regulators, technological advances and more selective data management will play a crucial role in this transition."
