"The feeling was much more like putting down a backpack that was really full of books that you got used to. And then you put it down, and you're like, 'Oh, man, that feels so much better.' It's more like that, rather than sort of a jump-for-joy kind of situation." I so resonate with this article. As a fellow GenXer, the moment my student loans were forgiven (last April) I felt an unexpected sense of relief. I fully believe in post-secondary education (in all its forms) but the costs have gotten out of control. I see administrators trying to fill gaps in student success services on campus and trying to do it with a relatively untrained support staff. This patchwork of a process to fill gaps on campus is VERY expensive and a contributor to skyrockeying higher ed costs (and not always helping students succeed). In my path to promote OT in higher education I see a knowledge barrier about the role OT could play in student success. Unfortunately the perception is that 1) either we can only work with one type of student or 2) we are too expensive. 1. Occupational therapists are trained to support the whole person and the occupations that they want and need to do - that includes participating in school but it also means figuring out how to take care of pets or make friends. As trained healthcare providers we understand the physical and psychological impacts on function and know how to help people be more successful in their roles. 2) When we present ourselves as OTs people assume we are "expensive" because we are health care providers. Others don't know what we can do and try to put us into a category. In the current higher education environment we cannot be categorized- we meet a need on so many campuses - we add a lot of value - and we are cost-effective. https://lnkd.in/gwSXKDky

A quick snapshot of some important trends to watch within the Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) world: 1) Currently, FAFSA completions for 2024 are down 40% YoY. This represents a massive miss on our government by not making this process as publicized and streamlined as possible. Many changes were made to the application process this year causing many to abandon the process. For many, this is as daunting as filling out taxes-- and similar to partnering with a CPA, the Federal Student Aid team is looking to increase summer staffers, but will likely be too little too late 2) A new form of Pell Grant is currently under debate, which would open up eligibility for shorter-term programs of 8-15 weeks (titled the Workforce Pell Act). The biggest concern now is who is going to pay for it. The current proposal is that funding would come from endowment taxation of larger, more prestigious institutions. I am in favor of this passing, as I believe the clear nature of short-term programs to gain a specific skill/accreditation will lower the barrier for many adults to enter new careers. In addition, there are guardrails to ensure schools are held to high completion and job placement rates for these programs.

In today's competitive job market, the promise of placement assistance is a crucial factor for students when choosing colleges and institutes. However, not all institutions fulfill this promise, leaving students stranded after graduation. To address this issue and prioritize student welfare, colleges and institutes should consider implementing a refund policy that offers partial reimbursement, ideally between 30-50%, if students are not successfully placed. The US Department of Education has just issued a request for information on how to best extend public loan forgiveness to Early Childhood Educators, especially in the for-profit space. If you are a person with knowledge and experience in the early childhood education field, it's critical to provide your official comments by July 22, 2024. This is a much needed development: early childhood educators are incredible teachers and caregivers for our youngest children. They are nearly always women, disproportionately women of color, and are among the lowest-paid occupations nationwide. Loan forgiveness could be a step in the right direction. “Early childhood educators help young children learn, grow, and thrive. But they are often poorly compensated, and student debt is a problem. If these educators can access Public Service Loan Forgiveness, we can help our youngest children, their families, and their communities,” said U.S. Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal. The Department is soliciting comments from researchers, academics, policy experts, administrators, and other individuals familiar with early childhood education (ECE) employer data and the administration of ECE programs about how the Department would determine employer eligibility and related considerations if for-profit ECE employers who provide services listed in the statute were to be considered eligible employers. I tweeted the ABC version published late last night. Fantastic news for students in both VET and Uni sector to help relieve student clinical placement poverty. My son is in this exact situation. He is 31 years old. and lives independently. He is upgrading from EN to RN and lots of practicum placements. He works full-time a at Chris O’Brien and burned through all his annual leave and now on leave without pay. He has just finished 2 weeks unpaid and in a couple f weeks will be back on unpaid prac. for 4 weeks and work weekends. A recipe for burnout 😲 This will be such a positive move for the profession, especially given 25% are aged over 26 years and 25% study part time because they can’t afford to study full-time. There are so many implications for delayed/slow burn new graduate entries into the workforce. This announcement may help many to afford to study full-time.
