Helen Jones, non-executive director at Fuller’s, talks to Ann Elliott about her journey to joining the board. Quick quotes: "Non Exec are a different role than an executive director, you are more 'hands off.'.. look for one while you are still in work but there is a time commitment... networking is very important in getting the right position... you do need to learn to stand back, support, guide and challenge... understand your remit. Cheers and challenge in equal measure, you need to participate but know the boundaries." 👉 Read the programme for Propel's Multi Club conference – Female Leaders and Entrepreneurs, here: https://lnkd.in/er7sJ342

Forget what you’ve been told—in business, it’s not who you know. It’s who knows you. The biggest breaks don’t come from the people you know but from those who recognize and remember you when it counts. Think about it—when investors, industry leaders, or top clients think of your field, does your name pop up? The key isn’t just skill or connections, but how visible and relevant you are to the people who make decisions. So focus on building visibility with the right people. It is not what you know. It is not who you know. It is who knows you. P.S. Here’s a look at those who joined our recent event in Portugal. Top global investors and business leaders gathered here. This wasn’t just another networking event—it was a real chance to get noticed. For those who presented, that visibility led to investments and partnerships. Being known by the right people can change everything.

What Makes a Great Board Member? By Diane Cross, Fraser President & CEO I have had the privilege of serving on numerous boards throughout my career including the 35 years as CEO reporting to Fraser’s Operating Board. Over the years, I have learned what truly makes a board member great. In my experience, individuals who have direct lived experience with your organization’s mission, products, or services are always the best contributors! Personal experience brings with it an unrivaled passion for success. To these board members, what you do really matters. Great board members must also have professional skills and competencies, with expertise in human resources, IT, finance, marketing, etc. Specific operational knowledge of the industry also adds value. These broad skills are essential for balancing board perspectives. Individuals who see themselves as good stewards and partners of the CEO are also critical. Although you don’t want a “rubber stamp” board that always says “yes”, you cannot afford to have board members who are toxic. The role of a CEO is challenging enough without having board members who do not conduct themselves in a professional and caring manner. The staff in an organization feel this tension when it occurs, and it definitely affects morale. Finally, board members who represent diversity in its broadest definition will add value to decision-making. Robust discussions with differing points of view are necessary for boards to fully vet ideas and improve the organization. I belong to an organization called WBL (Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation). If you are looking for great board talent, go to their website at www.wbl.org!

Hats off to the NABA INC. Planning committee and everyone who played a role in curating such an inspiring week at the 2024 NABA convention. So honored to have been part of the delegation that represented the CLA (CliftonLarsonAllen) family at this years convention. My heart is full and my spirit energized! As I reflect on the week that was, I am inspired and challenged to be a part of the solution that will improve and increase diversity and representation in the accounting profession. Key takeaways from the conference that really fed my soul: 1. Embrace your power and own your story. 2. There is nothing more powerful than what follows “I am….”. How do you define yourself? What are the stories you are telling yourself? 3. Do you have your personal board of directors? Key ones to have- A mentor, a banker, an attorney and an accountant (CPA). My additional personal favorite- a therapist! 4. The power of relationships. Invest in relationships. 5. AI is here to stay. Lean in. Embrace it. Master it. Let it create opportunities for you! 6. Embrace your weaknesses and lean in to them. If you don’t practice what you are not good at, you cannot get better! 7. Be a part of the FLOW! Foster Leadership Opportunities and Wealth! #NABAFlow
