To businesses looking to hire a videographer / editor out there: these skills take a lifetime to master! This is professional, creative work that takes time, cutting-edge technical savvy, a massive investment in expensive equipment, huge interpersonal skills, interview skills (psychology), an eye for light, a 6th sense for composition, an ear for music & pacing, AND the ability to tell a good story. So yes, writing. Stop thinking you can hire some kid to give you quality for $16.55/hr straight out of school. I'm seeing it a lot from HR departments and you're making a critical mistake. Not only is it harmful to your brand long term, but it's illogical and you wouldn't do it with ANY other component of your business. Most of your other staff don't have half of the qualifications or skills your high-end video professional carries. Why do this with the image you present to the world?

I checked my LinkedIn analytics recently and I saw that my impressions, search appearances and profile viewers have reduced. As much as I didn't like it, I was not surprised. 🎥Last year, I began my journey into a new career path. Maybe not exactly new because I had been doing it for a while but I wanted to go professional with it. I put in for my Masters in Visual Journalism and Storytelling in the United Kingdom. 🎥Coming from media and communications background, I have always loved telling stories that matter but I was limited because I did not have the skill set even though I knew I am talented in that field. For most of my Journalism work, I was in front of the camera presenting for the most part and when I am not doing that I am working as a Public Relations expert. So I knew I need to get some camera skills. 🎥I am beyond fulfilled that I am now equipping myself with the visual skills; videography, photography, graphics and data visualization, that I need to tell the next big stories. 🎥In the last one year I have been busy producing meaningful stories some of which include profile driven stories, nonprofit stories and short form documentaries. I FULLY changed careers at 30 years old. You can do it too. Let’s make it less scary: - List out what high-leverage skills you have - Identify skills in that list that transfer across industries - What are industries that interest you enough that you WANT to learn as you go? - Spend some time researching / consuming content from professionals in that field - If it’s a fit, start conversations on social media or in-person (even better) For me, I was a music producer and composer who couldn’t make ends meet. So, I took my skillset in high-end audio production, combined that with shooting and editing video skills I learned on my own and leveraged that into getting work as an assistant editor for a friend’s company. From there it was just putting in the reps and following my curiosities. Fast-forward to today and I’ve had a lucrative career as a professional cinematographer and now creative studio owner. 🎬 Interested in a game-changing opportunity? "Person helping video editors get clients in 35000" 🌍 Yesterday, while scrolling through Instagram, I stumbled upon an ad promising just that. Intrigued, I booked a call, which cost around ₹300. After chatting with the individual and thoroughly checking their profile, they seemed genuine. However, the hefty price tag of ₹35,000 put a damper on my plans, especially since I recently switched jobs in February after leaving my previous one in January. 💸 While I may not be able to invest right now, I'm hopeful about joining soon. How I became a video editor from a boring call center job In 2023, I completed my intermediate studies at Post Graduate College Abbottabad. I was thinking of taking admission to a university, but due to some financial issues, I was not able to enroll and ended up getting a call center job. I was not happy because of the repetitive tasks and night shifts. However, I had a passion for editing videos. I remember editing videos of my friends just to feel good because I was so tired of my boring job. One day, I saw a post on YouTube about hiring a video editor. I immediately applied but had no portfolio, so they rejected me. After that, I started learning about video editing software, animation, color grading, sound design, etc. I then began working on my portfolio. I researched what other video editor portfolios looked like for inspiration. I wrote a script about my specialties, did a voice-over, and added B-roll and SFX to make the video. I know this is not the best portfolio, but it is the result of my hard work. What do you think? Is it good?

Looking back at my journey from a freelance Production Assistant (PA) in film to where I am today in the sports industry, Tommy Lasorda's words seem fitting: "In baseball and in business, there are three types of people. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened." While my time as a PA may be in the rearview mirror, the lessons learned have become the foundation of my success. In the film industry, I realized early on that simply doing the bare minimum wouldn't advance my career. Distinguishing myself meant going beyond the standard PA duties. While some PAs were content with their roles, and others grumbled about the work and long hours, I saw an opportunity to advance my position in the film industry. Anticipating needs, taking on additional responsibilities, and actively seeking ways to contribute beyond expectations became my game plan. Fast forward to today, I've transitioned from entry-level production assistant to being a key player in various professional industries. Have you ever had to hire a communications expert and found out it wasn't as easy as you had hoped? I have played the role of the broker between an organization and a filmmaker or photographer, and there is a lot that I have learned in the process. These lessons learned made it so much easier the next time. As a storyteller and communications expert, why don’t I just do the work myself? It could be because I don’t have the skills the organization needs – I’m not a filmmaker, for example. But more often it is because I am not the right person to collect the story. Because hiring a local filmmaker or photographer to collect a story makes so much more sense, not only financially (you don’t need to be flying comms experts across the world unnecessarily), but culturally, language-wise and for so many other reasons. When you’re looking to hire someone to develop a story, it’s important to have a plan. First of all, it's SO important to pick the right person for the job. And then it’s important to make sure that they understand your expectations, your mission and vision, etc. Ruth Towell has some great advice on how to create a brief for working with a videographer. Good morning you rays of sunshine! - This week I completed 2 private commissions for PR firms who reached out on behalf of their clients. A fee was agreed, films were watched, and copy delivered on time for publication through my website. From my perspective these went off without a hitch, as I delivered on my promise, hit an agreed deadline, and more importantly, gave an honest opinion. - There are a few home entertainment releases on my plate for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 courtesy of Shelly at Substance Global, as well as a 4k review incoming on Oppenheimer for which Premier Comms need a name check. - Beyond that, a piece on Jason Isaacs as Archie will go up and I am starting to dive into trailers, by highlighting up and coming titles and first look images connected to projects I would like to cover.
