Today is International Women’s Day, and I’ve been in deep reflection about how I want to celebrate. The women in my life who I get to interact with daily both personally and professionally are women who inspire me on so many levels. From the friends I’m in community with who support me in showing up fully as myself, to the impact-driven peers and colleagues around the globe who lead by example, I am incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by women who want the world to work better for everyone and take action to make that happen. In truth, trying to make positive change often hurts. It requires the continuous willingness to have your heart broken by injustice and show up like it’s not. Some days I can step forward confidently; some days I stumble. But I never feel alone, because I know that other women are pushing in the same way. Learning systems thinking and being able to apply a systems mindset to complex problem-solving has changed my life for the better (thank you to The UnSchool of Disruptive Design) so I want to celebrate today with sharing this quote from one of the women who paved the way in systems thinking, Donella Meadows: “No one can define or measure justice, democracy, security, freedom, truth, or love. No one can define or measure any value. But if no one speaks up for them, if systems aren't designed to produce them, if we don't speak about them and point toward their presence or absence, they will cease to exist.” — Meadows. I met this young super Intelligent Lady in 2020 during the #firstwatchentrepreneurchallenge, I was the Facilitator for change and she came to party. Today I was the Principal and she was a Teacher to other Women in Business who wanted to know more about Skin Care making process and the #YOACables became an enabler. This is true across engineering as well. "Leaky pipeline" research shows that there are multiple points throughout a career where women disappear from an already too-small number. There is usually a cry that there aren't enough women to fill senior leadership roles, but that is a self-fulfilling prophecy if we don't pay attention to why those pipeline leaks are happening to begin with. There is no silver bullet when it comes to increasing DEI. It takes hard work, systemic review, and interventions across all experience levels. Simply hiring more young, diverse staff will not lead to more diverse senior ranks.
