Did you know: up to 75% of individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) may be undiagnosed. A complex disease that remains difficult for patients to relate and understand. To help healthcare professionals, Professor Jan Tack, a gastroenterologist at Leuven University, in partnership with Pr. Jean-Marc Sabaté and Pedro Costa Moreira, has created a tool to improve diagnosis and communication with patients. In this video, Jan Tack presents the genesis of this project for the Biocodex Microbiota Institute, and discusses the connection between #IBS and #microbiota. A user friendly and scientifically valid-based approached which aims to provide better support for patients thanks to a more practical approach to the disease. Our selected "Article of the Month": The costs analysis related to COPD, evaluated in a representative sample compared to individuals without the disease, informs that in 2019 the overall estimate of costs incurred was equal to $31.3 billion. This figure is destined to double within the next 10 years, albeit with significant national geographical differences. Dr James Pearson's #research, one of the #Type1DiabetesGrandChallenge funded projects, a collaboration between the Steve Morgan Foundation, Diabetes UK and JDRF UK, explores if the time of day we give #Type1Diabetes treatments helps to protect beta cells. Dr Pearson will give mice a treatment either in the morning or the evening to find out what time of day is best for keeping beta cells safe. Those who have recently received a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes may be eligible to participate in a clinical study examining a promising approach to extend the period of insulin production, often referred to as the "honeymoon phase". The Phase III clinical trial, known as DIAGNODE-3, is presently accepting new participants. You could possibly qualify for inclusion in the study if: (1) you have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the past six months; (2) you are aged between 12 and 29 years; and (3) you live close to or within the vicinity of one of the clinical trial locations in the United States or Europe. The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes is one of the locations in the United States where this study is taking place.
