Getting into effect as an advisory board member? How to navigate digital challenges successfully. The IT as an impenetrable construct leaves us no chance to analyze it and derive attractive measures from it? Wrong. I even assert that IT is extremely simple – when the right questions are asked. As advisory and supervisory board members, it's important to recognize that we can indeed influence IT strategy and implementation. We must move beyond the misconception that our impact is limited by a lack of experience or knowledge. By engaging with digital topics confidently and proactively, we can provide valuable guidance and oversight in this critical area. There are many ways to address digital topics. Here are a few examples: 👉 Influencing the agenda of advisory board meetings and placing desired topics 👉 Requesting reports from guests in advisory board meetings to review and provide advisory feedback 👉 Demanding access to audit reports, such as a KRITIS (Critical Infrastructure of Germany) audit 👉 Requesting insight into specific governance documents, such as the Business Continuity Plan 👉 Demanding transparency over performance evaluations of IT and its services 👉 Proposing deep-dive exchanges between CIO, IT managers, department heads, and the advisory board 👉 Participating in a selected workshop with a defined group on a specific topic to particularly contribute to its shaping (as an offer of assistance to the company) 👉 Strongly recommending a trusted consulting firm to assist the management 👉 Demanding any form of maturity assessments, for example, for IT security 👉 Demanding the existence of technologies, documents, or the like from the management, such as an Incident Response Plan 👉 Making agreements in advisory board meetings about the working methods and methodology to achieve results 👉 Suggesting best practice transfers from other companies and possibly opening doors and moderating the exchange 👉 Supporting investment decisions by evaluating the profitability of new technologies By the way: This is an excerpt from the book "IT & Digital for Supervisory Boards and Advisory Boards".
