As an Executive Board member of Kids' Chance of Florida, it is with a grateful and humble heart to partner with industry leaders like One Call, providing an employee-funded scholarship to Florida student Montse Gallegos. In August 2022, Montse’s father, a warehouse manager passed away due to injuries following a workplace accident. Later that year, Montse’s mother was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer. On the heels of an extremely tragic year, the Kids’ Chance of Florida/One Call scholarship is enabling her to attend college without the added stress of tuition payments. “Workplace injuries affect the whole family,” said One Call CEO Jay Krueger. “While trying to overcome grief, families are also forced to deal with mounting financial pressures. We are sensitive to these burdensome situations, which is why we want to be a part of the solution. This scholarship provides the children of critically or fatally injured workers with a path forward. We are proud to play a small role in helping them attain a much brighter future.” Kids’ Chance of Florida is a state chapter of Kids’ Chance of America, a charitable organization that is dedicated to making a significant difference in the lives of all children affected by workplace injuries by helping them pursue and achieve their educational goals. Children of these workers can no longer count on the income of the injured or deceased parent. Accompanying the grief of loss, or the need to deal with an injured parent, is the increased likelihood that they cannot afford a college education. Since its founding in 1988, Kids' Chance of America has awarded more than 10,000 scholarships totaling more than $36 million. Thank you Cameron Littlejohn for inviting me to be part of your classroom's Black History Month celebration. It could be easy to experience this beautiful montage as simply an inspirational Black History moment. It is so much more than this to me. I offer these two things for consideration. 1. The "Eye is The Limit" for elementary students . Young Black Scholars only believe they can be what they see Black adults being. All students benefit from seeing diverse leaders inspiring them to claim all of America's history as their own. Mr. Littlejohn's students can now imagine being: -College Presidents -School Superintendents -Black Academics - Philanthropic Leaders -President/CEOs 2. Efforts to erase Black History in schools require us to embed this history in the hearts and minds of young students. Mr. Littlejohn's video montage will exist in perpetuity in the hearts and minds of his students. Books can be removed from schools but the impact of this educational moment will never be forgotten. Share this video with children in your lives. Raise them to know, believe, and claim Black History as their own. We are... Our ancestors wildest dreams. We are Black Excellence We are Black History!

I am beyond blessed. Tonight, I moderated a conversation entitled, "A Roadmap to Graduate School: Conversations on Navigating the Ebony and Ivory Tower - Part 1: Is Graduate School for Me?" Thank you Dr. Xavier Burch, Ph.D., Dr. Asha Ralph, Dr. Sarah Pedigo Kulzer, and Ms. Bria Cross, M.S for sharing with the students your experiences answering the question, "Is Graduate School for me?" Your candid and authentic testimonies about some of the challenges you faced pursuing graduate school, how you overcame those challenges, and what you gained from turning their obstacles into sources of intrinsic motivation were informative, engaging, and inspiring. Below are a few words of wisdom that the panelists shared with students who were contemplating graduate school. "Practice self-care and develop a work-life balance." "Maintain faith and trust in God." "Know who you are, what your passions are, and align yourself with mentors and institutions who will nourish those passions" "Three D's: Discipline, Dedication, and Decisiveness." All in all, this conversation was just the beginning of many more conversations that will prepare our students to pursue graduate degrees in their respective fields of interest and navigate this terrain, both in the Ivory and Ebony towers.
