A question I would pose to Charlotte Wang, writer of today's story on Bloomberg, "TSMC's 13% Rout May Have Further to Go, Options Traders Indicate", https://lnkd.in/eUjy8uT6 Please let us know just what the options traders you spoke with mean when you report " .. the artificial-intelligence trade is unwinding." ? Are they thinking of the so-called "generative" variety of AI? Or the "robotics process automation" variety? Or the broader application of "machine learning"? The answer to this question is important to me, as someone not currently trading TSMC call options, but someone who has traded them in the past and will probably trade them again at sometime in the future. If the answer is the "generative" variety of AI - I think this is the most likely answer - then a big pullback in short term (up to 100 days to expiration) bullish options trading for TSMC, the stock, looks smart to me. At least on paper I think much better bullish opportunities of similar duration can be found elsewhere, probably for AMD, the stock, given its beachhead in the market for the CPU variety of semiconductors. I would have mentioned Intel, as well, but Intel's management continues to call for a public posture utterly unhelpful - just my two cents - to options traders (unfortunately like me) championing a bullish case. Do you trade call options for semiconductor manufacturers? What do you think about the big bearish bet on TSMC? #tsmc #optionstrading #amd #intel #generativeAI

The iron triangle of challenges: speed, latency, and power + thermal My old friend Dan Grossman's short research note is a great blend of market and technical analysis on how AI is changing the optical equipment market. His view that data centers are experiencing massive growth ties with what we saw at recent industry shows - the question that remains is how large the non hyperscaler data center market is becoming and whether de-clouding is becoming a noticeable trend.
I just published "Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) 2024: The Year of the AI Data Center", an in-depth report for TechInsights subscribers, covering what I saw and heard at this year's #OFC. It focuses on emerging technologies in their late research and early commercialization phases, with emphasis on themes common to the research conference and the trade show and the path to commercialization. https://lnkd.in/dKxSz2Mm This is a follow-on to my complementary (free sign-up required) short-form report on Key Take-Aways, published in mid-April. https://lnkd.in/ed2JEC8A The full report covers emerging technologies that address the "iron triangle" of fundamental problems that confront optical communications technology, compounded by the gargantuan needs of AI data centers: speed/capacity; delay/latency; and power consumption/thermal load. Academic and industrial research has produced solutions that are now in product development, some of them about to ship.

Ira Leventhal makes some great points, here. I've always loved the paradox of test... invent something in 2024 that can test (and characterize chips) that won't be thought of until 2027!! AI brings that added complexity. Great and thought provoking reading! #semiconductor #ATE #AI
