🌈 Each year, #LGBTQ+ #PrideMonth takes place in June to recognize the achievements of LGBTQ+ individuals and affirm their right to equal protections and justice under law. As recognition of LGBTQ+ rights continues to increase globally, events like parades are ever-growing safe spaces for members of the community to feel welcomed and celebrated. 💡 While we celebrate how far equal rights have come, it is important to remember that the fight for LGBTQ+ rights is far from over. LGBTQ+ children and young people continue to face homophobic, biphobic or transphobic bullying and hate crimes. Disturbingly, they are at a higher risk of #sexualviolence and #exploitation, being 3.8 times more likely to experience childhood sexual abuse compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers. Due to prevailing homophobic attitudes, LGBTQ+ youth are more likely to engage in exploitive situations for sexual contact since they view it as the only option to meet their basic needs, while fearing that their victimisation will be dismissed. 🌈💚 At #ProtectChildren, we stand with the LGBTQ+ community as we fight to end child sexual abuse (#CSA) for all children. During Pride Month, we’d like to take the time to specially focus on the intersection of CSA and the LGBTQ+ community. Learn more about our work ⬇ https://lnkd.in/drGq_Dxr

Today, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, let's reflect on our collective progress and ongoing challenges in LGBTQ+ rights. Globally, more countries have been decriminalising LGBTQ+ identities and advocating for marriage equality. In Hong Kong, we’ve reached a significant milestone with courts recently ruling in favour of recognising same-sex partnerships. But our collective commitment cannot stop here. Social prejudice and discrimination still pose significant challenges for many LGBTQ+ individuals. Studies from the Asia-Pacific region indicate that societal pressures result in 70-95% of the LGBTQ+ community choosing not to publicly identify as such. These barriers to self-identification limit support and resources and intensify existing problems such as poverty, violence, and marginalisation. We can all prioritise inclusion and strengthen protections for the LGBTQ+ community by addressing discrimination, harassment, and bullying, and calling out inappropriate comments and behaviours based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Let’s work together to create a safe environment for our LGBTQ+ friends. #twfhk #idahbt #genderequality #LGBTQ+

Though we've made great progress in advancing LGBTQ+ rights, we still have a long way to go. The LGBTQ+ community still faces constant discrimination—more than most people realize! I always strive to be the best advocate I can be and help educate those around me, so on this International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, I'd like to pass along some statistics: ⚕️ 𝟐𝟑% of LGBTQ+ people have witnessed discriminatory or negative remarks against LGBT people by healthcare staff. 💍 𝟏𝟏% of LGBTQ+ people have faced domestic abuse from a partner in the last year. 🏠 𝟏𝟖% of LGBTQ+ people have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives. 💼 𝟑𝟓% of LGBTQ+ staff have hidden that they are LGBT at work for fear of discrimination. 🎓 𝟒𝟐% of LGBTQ+ students have hidden their identity at university for fear of discrimination. ⚠️ 𝟔𝟒% of LGBTQ+ people had experienced anti-LGBT+ violence or abuse. 🎒 𝟒𝟐% of LGBTQ+ school pupils have been bullied in the past year. These numbers are heartbreaking—we need to do better. Take time to educate yourself and others, learn how to be a better advocate both in the workplace and outside of it, and use your voice to support those who need it. LGBTQ+ individuals deserve better, and it's our job to make this a reality! #InternationalDayAgainstHomophobiaTransphobiaAndBiphobia #LGBTQ #LGBTQRights

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOTB) serves as a vital reminder of the ongoing struggle against discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community. This day, observed on May 17th, emphasizes the importance of understanding, respect, and equality for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It calls on individuals, organizations, and governments to actively reject all forms of bigotry. As an aspiring leader, I am committed to fostering an environment where people are valued for their abilities and contributions, not judged by whom they love. Recognizing and celebrating diversity in the workplace not only enriches our collective culture but also drives innovation. By focusing on skills and character, we build a stronger, more inclusive society where everyone can thrive. #IDAHOTB #DiversityAndInclusion #LeadWithLove (Photo by The Advocate)

The LGBTQ+ community refers to those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, or other non-heterosexual or cisgender identities. This community has a rich history of fighting for equality and acceptance, including the famous Stonewall Riots in 1969, which marked the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Today, there are still many challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, including discrimination, social stigma, and lack of legal protections. As caregivers, it's important to provide compassionate, non-discriminatory care to all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It's also important to create an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected. By educating ourselves and staying up-to-date on the issues facing the LGBTQ+ community, we can better equip ourselves with the knowledge and skills to provide culturally sensitive care. Let's work together to create a world where everyone is accepted and celebrated for who they are. 🌈🏳️🌈 #LGBTQ+ #Equality #Diversity #Inclusion #Acceptance

According to a recent report from the Public Religion Research Institute, approximately 15% of Gen Z adults identify as bisexual — making them the largest group within Gen Z’s LGBTQ+ community. When we talk about what it looks like to support and care for the next generations of LGBTQ+ youth, it is imperative that we recognize the unique needs of bisexual+ young people. Bi+ youth are also less likely to be connected with supportive programs and services, both at school and in their local community, that can help them navigate their identities. Bi+ people also experience higher rates of suicidality, substance use, bullying, and sexual violence compared to their gay, lesbian, and straight peers. Head to bihealthmonth.org for resources to learn how to support the bi+ young people in your life. #BiHealthMonth #BHAM #Bisexual #LGBTQ

Featured Community Commons Library: LGBTQ+ Health Equity Library LGBTQ+ people belong everywhere. They deserve to live open, authentic lives without fear of discrimination, harassment, judgement, or violence. Despite decades of tireless advocacy, however, LGBTQ+ people still experience disproportionately worse health outcomes, endure ongoing discrimination, and are four times more likely to experience violence than their straight and cisgender peers. These disparities are often further compounded by isolation and a lack of access to appropriate primary and mental health care. The LGBTQ+ Health Equity Library highlights dozens of newly-curated resources and stories to advance equitable health outcomes for queer and gender-expansive individuals and the LGBTQ+ community as a whole.
