Always great to see hellbenders in the news! Thanks to BBC Earth for reporting on hellbender conservation, including the Indianapolis Zoo's rearing program. Over the summer, more than 300 hellbenders that were raised behind the scenes at the Zoo were released into the wild in southern Indiana's Blue River. And soon, the Zoo will receive a new batch of hundreds of hellbender eggs to start the rearing process all over again. We'll keep you posted on their development. Reporter Graeme Green interviewed our hellbender partners at Purdue University as well as Dr. Amael Borzee, co-chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission's Amphibian Specialist Group. #hellbender #salamander #amphibian #conservation #partnership https://lnkd.in/gUuDn6jM

We're counting down to World Migratory Bird Day on Oct 12. This year's theme is "Protect Insects, Protect Birds." Insects are essential energy sources for many migratory bird species, like the wood duck. Insect populations are on the decline globally. If we want to protect bird populations, we need to protect bugs. This World Migratory Bird Day, we're raising awareness about these relationships between species in hopes that you will help us conserve them. Here are some actions you can take: 1) Restore bird-friendly habitat. Native plants support more animal life than non-native plants. Whether you have a small porch or numerous acres, you can help wildlife through careful plant selection. 2) With autumn here, consider leaving the leaves! They provide essential habitat to many animals, and decomposing leaf litter supports healthy soil. 3) Discontinue or reduce use of pesticides and herbicides, which kill or harm insects, birds and the plants that many species use for food. 4) Turn lights out at night, especially during migrations. Artificial lights can make it harder for birds to navigate at night and negatively impact insect behavior. Keep an eye on this space. The Global Center is eagerly watching the autumn migration, and we'll share more cool bird and bug relationships in the days leading up to Oct 12. And learn more by visiting the World Migratory Bird Day's website. https://lnkd.in/gZHFyBq #conservation #birds #insects

New Protect Species Podcast episode! This week, we take a deep dive (pun intended) into the magical world of manatees. These sea cows can be found in marine and freshwater ecosystems and are certainly a fan favorite in Florida. But due to threats like climate change and habitat degradation, manatees are threatened with extinction. Justin Birkhoff and Monika Bohm talk with experts in manatee rescue and rehabilitation about the teamwork it takes to protect these gentle giants. Our thanks to Craig Miller from Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens and Nadia Lentz from Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission for joining us this week! Remember, episodes of the Protect Species Podcast can be found on all major podcast platforms, such as Apple, Spotify and YouTube. Wonderful to see USDA talking about Indiana's hellbenders! Help the Hellbender is a partnership between Purdue University and several zoos, including the Indianapolis Zoo. Quietly, behind the scenes, our zoo has spent years raising hundreds of young hellbenders since they were eggs. This summer, all 200+ Indianapolis Zoo hellbenders are being released into the wild. Zoos aren't the only important partners in this network. Conservation would not be possible without the participation of farmers and landowners, as USDA explains in this article. https://lnkd.in/diEnp-wM #Hellbenders #Conservation
