🚀 Elliot Swartz, Principal Scientist for Cultivated Meat at The Good Food Institute believes smart manufacturing is the best way for alternative proteins to compete on a bigger scale. 🌱 And he says the sustainability benefits can be huge due to the reduction in land use. “Agricultural sprawl is using so much land and contributing so much carbon through deforestation that if you’re able to have more alternative protein diets, you would shrink the land footprint considerably,” says Elliot. 📰 Find our more from Elliot and others about smart manufacturing in the Q2 2024 edition of Protein Production Technology International! 🔗https://hubs.ly/Q02Cb_5v0 #smartmanufacturing #innovation #alternativeproteins #agriculture #scaling #climatesolutions

Thanks Laura Hodgkiss for the chat on what we at PINC are looking for within Agrifood in order to reach a more sustainable way of eating on this planet 🌎💚 This is what we at PINC are on the lookout for right now: 🌱Soil Health: Recognizing the tight connection between soil, planetary, and human health, we are keen to invest in technologies that promote soil health. 🥤Sustainable Packaging: With the upcoming EU regulation (PPWR) set to begin in 2025, which requires all packaging to be recyclable by 2030, we are seeking circular packaging designs with less or renewable materials. ☕ Strategic Focus: Solutions related to Paulig's main crops; wheat, corn, and coffee across the value chain, innovations in agtech is particularly interesting. 🍭Sugar Reduction: This is a prioritized area within Paulig, we’re interested to meet startups developing ingredients that maintain or improve functionality and taste while improving Nutriscore.
Rosemari Herrero caught up with FoodHack to share the solutions we’re looking to back next here at PINC. Hear which technologies we are on the lookout for, as well as what’s top of mind for 24 fellow AgriFood investors in this go-to cheatsheet for fundraising founders. Solutions include: 🌾 Green Fertilizers 🥡 Sustainable Packaging ☀️ Climate Resilient Crops 🪴 Soil-Enriching Solutions 🧊 Cold Chain Optimization 🧁 Sugar Reduction Technologies 🍫 Coffee and Chocolate Alternatives 🧫 Molecular Farming and Plant Cell Culture 🛠️ Picks and Shovels for Food Processing and Food Safety +51 additional solutions Discover all the solutions and get in touch if you have the technology: https://lnkd.in/eyySvBWa

How to think FOOD differently: Innovation is not exclusive to Financial Services or efficiency! Do you think GenAI has everything Innovation has to offer in 2024! There's so much more than that on the menu. Just think of topics such as regenerative agriculture, trends to get from Carbon positive agriculture to negative. Have you ever thought that "Carbon" will be seen as the new "Calories"? To be measured, analyzed and reduced? All this and more in the article below: https://lnkd.in/eBvjYV5d

Exciting insights from farming leaders on scaling up adoption of sustainable practices. The shift towards resilience and equitable food systems is a collective responsibility. Challenges include the lack of alignment in agricultural value chains, limited access to technology, and the need for socioeconomic profitability. Partnerships with research institutions, NGOs, and innovation hubs are crucial to deploy affordable technologies and educate farmers on benefits. Farmers, central to the transition, need policies tailored to their needs and active involvement in decision-making processes. How can we ensure global collaboration to support farmers, mitigate risks, and build a future where agriculture thrives sustainably? #sustainability #agriculture #farmers

🌱 Alternative Protein: The Future of Global Food Security? 🌱 As the world faces challenges from population growth and climate change, the alternative protein industry is emerging as a game changer. With technologies like plant-based meat substitutes and lab-grown meat, we could be looking at the solution to feeding 10 billion people sustainably by 2050. Key points: **Environmental impact** Alternative proteins significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional animal farming. For example, Quorn produces 95% less CO2 than beef mince. **Efficiency** New technologies, like Solar Foods and Steakholder's 3D meat printers, are revolutionising food production, making it faster and more efficient. **Opportunities for engineers** Engineers will be at the forefront of developing technologies to scale production and ensure efficient, sustainable protein alternatives. The potential is huge, but consumer acceptance and regulatory challenges remain. Will alternative proteins reshape the future of food? #AlternativeProtein #Sustainability #FoodIndustry

𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗞𝗮𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻'𝘀 "𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵" 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝘁. Vanessa Rein. The global fish demand has doubled in 50 years, raising environmental concerns. Addressing this, cellular agriculture, exemplified by the "Clean Fish" project at Kaesler Nutrition GmbH, offers an innovative solution. My thesis compared Kaesler's development of nutrient broth to feed the growing fish cells with conventional methods, using key indicators like "Climate Change" and "Cumulative Energy Demand." 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: - Replacing the incubator with a large bioreactor alone could improve the results by over 90 %. - Beyond examined indicators, numerous other relevant environmental impact categories exist, such as biodiversity, which will play an increasingly crucial role due to issues like overfishing. The findings suggest the possibility of substantial enhancements in sustainability. Therefore, I aspire for my thesis and recommendations to play a role in enhancing the sustainability of future production, fostering a move towards cruelty-free food production.
