Article share: Leveling the Planting Field by Cee Stanley of Green Heffa Farms. "I had no intention of becoming one of the only single, landowning Black women farmers in the nation. The number is so few that the USDA Agricultural Census doesn’t even calculate it. My guess is that there are fewer than 15,000 of us nationwide. Considering what Black, Indigenous, and People of Color women are capable of, it just makes sense to me that we invest in us. That is what we are doing at Green Heffa Farms: creating consciously grown value-add products and establishing our brand and values in the marketplace while staying true to our Black and green roots." https://lnkd.in/eD3ezVsE https://lnkd.in/euCU8-b3

#NationalAgDay was founded in 1973 and is dedicated to increasing the public's awareness of agriculture's role in modern society. Invasive species and toxic substances are among the many threats to American agriculture and natural resources. Through targeting, detection, and interception, CBP agriculture specialists work to prevent these threats from entering the United States. Highlights from The Work of Black Farmers--Conversations on Food Justice We're excited to share insights from an inspiring conversation on food justice and the crucial work of Black farmers, co-produced with No Kid Hungry/ Share Our Strength. This dialogue sheds light on the barriers to entry that make it difficult for Black farmers to thrive and explores the innovative ways farmers and activists are turning the tide to build resilient agricultural communities. Key Takeaways: Passion and Purpose: "What brings us to this work is just our passion for what we are doing." -David Street Community Impact: "Using our legal education to make a tangible difference in the community is paramount." -Ebony Woodruff Supporting Local Farmers: "We need to support our small farmers where we can, and we need to be able to be thoughtful about where we buy our food and make those connections locally." -Carter Crane Inclusivity and Equality: "Imagine the voices, imagine the policies, imagine the culture, upliftment and ideas and innovations that would happen if we all had a fair and equal voice in this." -June Provost Small farming communities produce many of the foods and resources we cannot live without, yet they often face disproportionately high rates of food insecurity. By supporting local farmers, we can address systemic issues within our food system and ensure access to fresh, local produce for all. Let's continue the conversation, support our local farmers, and advocate for policies that promote equity in agriculture. Together, we can build a more just and sustainable food system. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ebFDJZuR #FoodJustice #SupportSmallFarms #LocalAgriculture #SustainableFarming #EquityInAg #CommunitySupportd responsibility to celebrate contributions and support continued prosperity of our Black farmers. In 1910, Black farmers owned 14 percent of all American farmland … and that number fell below two percent as a result of racism, discrimination, and dispossession. This film chronicles Black farmers’ efforts to reclaim their agricultural heritage. Collectively, their work has a major impact, as each is a leader in sustainable agriculture and food justice movements. #earthday #blackfarmers #racialjustice #foodjustice #inthistogether

https://lnkd.in/gnVJHJcf Economic development doesn't always mean pavement. How can we support economic development while also protecting our food and water resources? Here's a great example. "Jennifer Colvin is a fifth-generation rancher in Tenino, and her family’s ranch, Colvin Ranch, has been operating in Southwest Washington for more than 100 years. Supporting local, family farmers, and ranchers is how we invest in rural economies and promote community-minded agriculture practices."
