EMPHYSEMA Emphysema is primarily a pathological diagnosis that affects the air spaces distal to the terminal bronchiole. It is characterized by abnormal permanent enlargement of lung air spaces with the destruction of their walls without any fibrosis and destruction of lung parenchyma with loss of elasticity. SYMPTOMS OF EMPHYSEMA • breathlessness with exertion, and eventually breathlessness most of the time in advanced disease • susceptibility to chest infections • cough with phlegm production • fatigue • barrel-shaped chest (from expansion of the ribcage in order to accommodate enlarged lungs) • cyanosis (a blue tinge to the skin) due to lack of oxygen. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinking #snsdesignthinkers

"ESR: A Key Marker for Detecting Inflammation and Monitoring Health Conditions" The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) test measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a tube over one hour. A faster rate suggests inflammation or disease, but it doesn't pinpoint the cause. Normal ranges vary by age and sex. Elevated ESR indicates inflammation but requires further investigation for a specific diagnosis. While ESR is not specific to any one disease, it provides useful information about inflammation and helps guide further diagnostic testing. Ultimately, the decision to get an ESR test should be guided by your healthcare provider, who will consider your symptoms, medical history, and other tests to determine if it’s appropriate for your situation. When to Consider Getting an ESR Test: If your doctor suspects you have an inflammatory or autoimmune condition. To evaluate the extent of inflammation in known conditions. To monitor treatment progress or disease progression in chronic conditions. #Tiratricol or Triac (Emcitate by Egetis Therapeutics AB) is probably be a useful #orphandrug for #MCT8 / #AHDS rare disease patients and some #thyroid patients. This is probably worth mentioning on #WorldThyroidDay. However, this is only true if the medicine is available, and the price will be fair and affordable… In preparation for World Thyroid Day, the Pharmaceutical Accountability Foundation (PAF) this week visited Erasmus MC (which did the phase 2/3 clinical trials for RTTI/Egetis) with questions how they can ensure that tiratricol (if approved by the European Medicines Agency EMA) remains affordable. Pharmaceutical compounding by the Apotheek A15 pharmacy was one of the options discussed. PAF is worried about Egetis plans to ask $300,000 per patient per year in USA, and 130,000 per year in Europe, while the raw material costs only €22 per year. Patients have a #humanright to #access tiratricol, and Egetis has the possibility to enable this by asking a #fairmedicineprice. It was great to hear that Egetis is providing tiratricol for free on a compassionate use basis to MCT8/AHDS patients anywhere while it is discussing registration with EMA. Let’s hope we can avoid another pharma piracy case like #CDCA Leadiant Biosciences Ltd or #mexiletine Namuscla Lupin! Happy World Thyroid Day!
Did you know May 25th is World Thyroid Day? 🦋 MCT8 deficiency is an ultra-rare thyroid hormone-related condition so this day is particularly important to our community. And as the thyroid gland is butterfly-shaped, it is often the symbol that unites everyone living with a thyroid condition across the world. At Egetis, we focus on treatments for rare diseases with significant unmet medical needs, so we understand the importance of awareness to people living with these conditions. By championing Thyroid Journeys this World Thyroid Day, we hope to elevate the experiences of people living with rare thyroid syndromes, like MCT8 deficiency. Along with Thyroid Federation International, join us in celebrating the #ThyroidJourney by clicking the link to build your own butterfly photo. https://lnkd.in/d_J22gZd #WorldThyroidDay #MCT8deficiency #allanherndondudleysyndrome #mct8_ahds #ButterflyEffect #ThyroidJourney #CareForTheRare

Happy to see Pendar Khalilis second paper published in Acta Orthopaedica. In this paper we have reviewed a cohort of 1,455 patients with hip fractures osteosynthesis. Variables from Swedish Fracture Register were extracted and completed by review of medical records. We used the FRI diagnosis based on current consensus criteriae. ➡ FRI incidence was 1.1% ➡ Half of FRIs were diagnosed with 3 weeks ➡ Almost half of patients with FRI were dead at 1 year ➡ Mortality rate at 2 years was 69% in FRI patients vs 33% in non-FRI patients ➡Staf. Aureus was the most common pathogen #SwedishFractureRegister #FRI #FractureRelatedInfection

#SWHRtalksAutoimmune in a new fact sheet focusing on how autoimmune diseases affect women throughout the body. The fact sheet explores the Endocrine System, the Digestive System, the Integumentary System, and the Musculoskeletal System. More than 24 million Americans are affected by autoimmune diseases, and 4 out of 5 autoimmune patients are women. The more we know about how autoimmune diseases impact the body, the faster we can diagnosis them and the better we can treat these conditions in individuals across the lifespan. Half the battle is over when you know the problem. Unfortunately, in the case of rare or uncommon diseases, diagnosis becomes difficult, which takes a mental, emotional and physical toll on patients as well as their family members. Celiac is one such disease where the diagnosis is often delayed. Read my blog to learn about celiac, its symptoms, tests to diagnose and diet to follow. A 2024 study found that elevated levels of faecal calprotectin were associated with poor lung function in children with cystic fibrosis. The findings suggest that lung inflammation could be a risk factor in higher levels of calprotectin, which requires further study. People living with immune-mediated diseases like cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) deserve improved outcomes and sustained relief. These complex diseases remain hard to diagnose and treat. Through earlier intervention and personalised medicine approaches we are striving for remission, not just symptom management.
