Food matters: A global shift to a healthier, more sustainable diet could be a huge lever to limit global warming to 1.5°C, PIK researchers find. The results of a new study indicate that a shift in diets could make a considerable difference if we do not want to crash through the 1.5°C limit in the next 10 to 15 years. "This calls for globally concerted efforts to support the transition towards sustainable healthy diets,” concludes PIK director Johan Rockström. The resulting reduction of greenhouse gas emissions would increase the available carbon budget compatible with limiting global warming to 1.5°C, and allow to achieve the same climate outcome with less carbon dioxide removal and less stringent CO2 emissions reductions in the energy system. "More meat, more greenhouse gases and more global warming: Less meat, less carbon emissions and a more healthier You and Earth" Your diet is an important part of your carbon footprint and it’s very important to know that a large proportion of human emissions comes from food production with the meat industry being one of the highest producers of carbon emissions. Scientists estimate that Agriculture is responsible for an estimated 14 percent of the world's greenhouse gases. A significant portion of these emissions come from methane, which, in terms of its contribution to global warming, is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Did you know that cows emit a massive amount of methane through belching? The world's 1.5 billion cows and billions of other grazing animals emit dozens of polluting gases, including lots of methane. Two-thirds of all ammonia comes from cows. The U.S. Food and Agriculture Organization says that agricultural methane output could increase by 60 percent by 2030 This implies an increase in meat consumption will mean an increase in cow production and consequently an increase in greenhouse gas production. Besides the greenhouse gas production, Cows also greatly contribute to deforestation and land degradation BUT we can change all these! You can make a change by simply reducing the amount of meat you eat. Eating less meat will lead to a decrease in cattle production, hence a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from the cattle industry. Data is key for growers to understand how to improve their productivity and efficiency - which is why we aim to bring down the costs of access to data for all farmers. Once a farmer knows more about what is happening, the journey can really start to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The environmental costs of producing the food we consume (and waste) include greenhouse gas emissions from carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, deforestation to use land for crop and production purposes, eutrophication of fresh and seawater due to nutrient runoff from agricultural land, use of vast amounts of freshwater for irrigation, and losses to biodiversity. These costs are high. For example, the greenhouse gas emissions from our food systems alone have been estimated to be of a magnitude to push global warming by the end of the century above the Paris Agreement of 1.5°C [ 1 ]. Switching to a #plantbased diet can help fight climate change, UN experts have said. A major report on land use and climate change says the West's high consumption of meat and dairy produce is fuelling global warming. But scientists and officials stopped short of explicitly calling on everyone to become #vegan or #vegetarian. They said that more people could be fed using less land if individuals cut down on eating meat. The document, prepared by 107 scientists for the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), says that if land is used more effectively, it can store more of the carbon emitted by humans. https://lnkd.in/eB7pKZ9 #veganuary
