Comprising experts from the former Portuguese Vegetarian Association (AVP), our Portugal team has already been making waves in transforming the country’s food systems. Portugal is the first country in the world to mandate at least one plant-based option in public schools, universities, hospitals, and prisons – a bold feat, only achieved after intense campaigning by the AVP! While the country is known for its high seafood consumption rates – the highest rate in all of Europe –, it is also home to a rich, diverse cuisine, based on fragrant spices, veggies, and delicious Portuguese olive oil. The University of Graz is opening a 100% plant-based canteen! 🇦🇹🌱 Following campaigning by the Plant-Based Universities (@plantbasedunis) movement and overwhelming support from the Students’ Union, the @universityofgraz is opening a fully plant-based student cafeteria on its campus — while closing its old cafeteria. The move is part of a broader shift towards more sustainable, plant-rich catering at universities – that want to serve as a role model for reducing emissions and our impact on the environment amidst the climate crisis. We’re happy to see more higher education institutions taking food-centric measures to tackle the climate crisis! Which other universities should go plant-based? Our team is preparing for the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16) starting in 3 weeks! 🐟🌿 Meet the ProVeg delegation ⬇️ The objective of COP16 is to develop national strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. COP16 has three main goals:  1. the conservation of biological diversity (or biodiversity);  2. the sustainable use of its components;  3. and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources. ProVeg received official observer status to COP16 earlier this year. It’s the very first time that our team is attending and we are very much looking forward to drawing attention to the crucial connection between biodiversity and our food systems. New York Climate Week just ended yesterday. While our team is on their way home, here are some of their key successes from last week! ✨ We successfully applied to have an event on the Food Day by Tilt Collective. Our Global CEO Jasmijn de Boo represented ProVeg to discuss our work in changing school menus as well as how we helped change the catering at the UN Climate Conferences. Our colleague Lana Weidgenant also spoke on the Food Day by Tilt Collective in a session hosted by Francesco Branca, the World Health Organization's Director of Nutrition. Lana also spoke at a session hosted by the UN High-Level Climate Champions. We co-hosted a big tent food systems gathering and reception together with UN Foundation, the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, and Mercy For Animals which had speakers from COP29 and the FAO, where topics such as COP30 in Brazil were covered. Of course, we made sure to serve delicious fully plant-based food at the reception! 🌱 And that's not all! Our team signed onto a letter for food systems to be included more in the national climate commitment of Brazil and we were able to deliver this letter to the First Lady of Brazil, Rosângela Lula da Silva, and the Ministry for Environment and Climate Change (see pictures of us handing over the letter). ✉️ Part of our youth board was also in New York. We recommended them to Food Tank for their ‘Next Generation of Changemakers’ panel discussion, where 3/4 of their panel was ultimately our youth board representatives. Have you ever thought about the connection between biodiversity loss and our food systems? We'll attend the UN Biodiversity Conference (#COP16) in Colombia this October to draw attention to this! Animal agriculture is responsible for about 70% of Amazonian deforestation. Land is cleared for cattle grazing and for the growing of feed crops for cattle. The impact of that intervention on biodiversity is huge. And our team on site has been busy those past few days. 🌎 On Food Day, our Senior UN Policy Manager Lana Weidgenant spoke at the panel discussion “Healthy, sustainable diets: how can we achieve them?”. The panel discussion was moderated by Francesco Branca from the World Health Organization. Other panellists were Gunhild Anker Stordalen, Executive Chair of EAT, Kerstin Plehwe, President of PAN International - Physicians Association for Nutrition, and Paul Newnham, CEO of the SDG2 Advocacy Hub. We’ve been busy! 🌱💼 During the last three months, ProVeg International has been keeping the momentum for food-system change going like never before, driving plant-based progress around the world. Here are some of our recent highlights: - Our 12th Incubator cohort of the ProVeg Incubator delivered impressive pitches at this year’s Demo Day in Berlin. - The fifth edition of the New Food Forum in Warsaw brought together food industry leaders to discuss food security, climate change, and the future of cultivated meat. - ProVeg Asia’s latest report revealed massive interest on plant-based eating in China. - ProVeg Česko participated in a government roundtable focused on revising school-meal regulations in order to include more plant-based options. - The German Nutrition Society officially recognised the benefits of plant-based diets, after years of advocacy work by ProVeg. - ProVeg launched the Action On Food Hub at the Bonn Climate Change Conference and contributed to the UN High-Level Political Forum, bringing food-system transformation onto the climate agenda. - The Kickstarting for Good initiative reviewed 430 applications from over 70 countries, with 24 changemakers selected for an intensive training programme in Berlin - ProVeg’s Global CEO Jasmijn de Boo spoke at EAGxUtrecht2024, engaging with students on alternative proteins and offering insights into plant-based career paths Thanks to your support, we’ve been able to achieve so much!
