Championship Teams - Boston Celtics The storied Boston Celtics won their 18th title this week. How do some teams seem to do better than others? They know how to win, expect to win, and have the desire to prepare to win. The Celtics had a good team committed to the purpose, goals, and continuous improvement toward their own true potential You always hear championship teams talk about “team chemistry”. This is key and comes back to belief, commitment, and trust. They all believed and committed to do their part.  They depended on each other, held each other accountable, and when challenges arose, (a key player injury) they always had the “next man up” attitude with zero fear. Do you have a championship team? Do you and your team believe in and have a clear picture of what true potential looks like?  Have you 100% committed to it? Do you trust everyone on the team? There are only a few things in your business that produce the most results. Do you and your team know what they are and are you focused on spending most of your time there? The Celtics had a bold goal, built the right team, committed to their belief, and trusted they would get there. Oh yes, and they had a good ole Indiana boy who assembled the Celtics 18th championship team.  Brad Stevens, Celtics President is a former coach who focuses on a few simple fundamentals and concepts. His deals were instrumental in putting the pieces in place to get there. His competitive coaching and management style mimics a former Celtics star, and also an Indiana native, who also helped the Celtics win 3 of their championships – Larry Bird. (The same Larry Bird who scored 54 against my high school team!)   So, the keys are: Belief and commitment to winning Assemble the right team Include a good ole Indiana boy 😉

A dry Croke Park.. The GAA is displaying a commendable example of prioritising responsible alcohol consumption over financial gain, especially in the context of their stance on alcohol consumption at sporting events. Unlike the scenarios where American football and Bruce Springsteen concerts at Croke Park allow fans to enjoy alcoholic beverages from their seats, the GAA's approach warrants attention for its forward-thinking stance on public health and safety when it comes to Irish sport. This discrepancy isn't merely about creating a double standard but underscores a deeper commitment to encouraging more responsible alcohol consumption among fans, irrespective of the event when it comes to Irish sport. What rockers or other foreign sports do is not relevant to it. Thems their rules. In not extending the permission to consume alcohol directly in the seating areas to all events, the GAA indirectly supports efforts made elsewhere, like the rugby Principality Stadium in Wales and Twickenham, to offer a more inclusive and comfortable environment for all attendees. It reflects government health policy. Irish rugby choses to ignore this The GAA's stance reflects its values. Rugby had a choice whether to accept these values and are lucky to be allowed to play at Croke Park at all

Taking a look at the culture shift behind the phenomenally successful Limerick Senior Hurling Team. "Central to the change, was doing things right in every respect. It wasn’t just about the sport science, it was as much about how you carried yourself as a Limerick hurler and what you represented. In the same Irish Examiner article (https://lnkd.in/eZ2-ZRC5) Fitzgibbon relates a story where he is taking an underage Limerick squad for a Saturday morning session on one of the astroturf pitches in UL when he sees two players — who would both go on to be 2018 All-Ireland senior winners — standing at the side of the pitch, urinating. “What does he do? What would you do? Ignore it and pass it off as something harmless and something they’ve probably seen or even done before back at their clubs? Not when you’ve talked about and emphasised the importance of culture. There’s more to it than sweeping the sheds. It’s literally not taking the piss. Not any more. He recounts that “I called all the lads in and said to the two boys, ‘Lads, would you stand up and piss in your sitting room?’ Of course the boys were all sheepish. ‘No.’ “So I said, ‘Well, why would you come into this facility and disrespect it?’ Now apologise to the group.’ So they did. And then I said, ‘Okay. Now tog back in. You’re not training today.’ “Then I said to the rest of the lads, ‘This has to be a lesson to you. This is Limerick hurling. In Limerick hurling, everything we do is about respect. We respect the facilities, we respect our teammates, we respect everything to do with Limerick hurling. The minute you get that jersey, you are elevated to another level, so we must behave accordingly. He has a nearly 2,000-point lead over Xander Schauffele (5,993 to 4,057), and more than twice as many points McIlroy has (2,545).McIlroy, though, did admit it may not be the "fairest reflection of who's been the best player of the year.""But I think at this point, we're not in for totally fair. “How good can we be this year?” Limerick won their 6th Munster Hurling title in a row yesterday - the first time it’s ever been done. Limerick’s Gearoid Hegarty when asked about what contributes to their enduring consistency; his response included; “How good can we be this year?” As a group they don’t worry about what happened last year or 2018 (when they won their first Munster title). It’s all about this year. “How good can we be this year”, doesn’t imply that they have to win anything or meet a certain objective (I am sure they have these as well!). It suggests that they’re still learning, still seeking to get better. It helps to take the focus off any targets they may have, and switch them towards what they want to do. Seeing “How good can we be” I’d suggest creates a sense of freedom for the players. It allows them to explore their own performance. They feel safe to make a mistake or two, knowing that is part of the journey towards seeing how good they can be. Mistakes are often when risk doesn’t pay off, but it taking risks we explore how good we can be. Hegarty’s goal yesterday, for me, highlights this mindset. Striking a moving ball along the ground is a very difficult skill, even at the elite level. But he was willing to try it and it paid off.
