Back to the hard-hitting hyper-professional updates you've come to expect from us: we're watching the Barbie movie! We figured what better "book" - it's a loose term, okay? - to feature in this week's Book Club than 2023's top-grossing film. We'll be digging into the intersection of work and identity, the all-male board of Mattel (which in reality consists of 7 men and 5 women), and why the "Kenocracy" was apparently so appealing. If you loved the movie - come join us! Tell us why it had such an impact. If you hated the movie - even more reason to join! We love a hater. If you're busy, or just don't like the prospect of talking with a bunch of strangers, leave your thoughts in the comments. All opinions welcome tomorrow at 8AM PST. Here's what I know about "Workplace You" if you identified with #WeirdBarbie... Greta Gerwig & Kate McKinnon (who played Weird Barbie), described her as: - She was "played with a little too hard" & she's seen some things. - She's the most empathic and wise of all the Barbies. - She owns every piece of herself, despite some tough experiences. Do a quick #google search and you'll find some fascinating "I'm a Weird Barbie" mini-memoirs. As a people leader & an employee, it can be a real kick in the pants when you realize you're the Weird Barbie...but only if you fight it. (#neurodivergence note: Weird Barbie does not #mask) Don't fight it. Weird Barbies in the office... - Are the original #generalists connecting all the dots others don't see. - Give truth frankly squarely grounded in themselves. But, you have to ask. - Have experienced many roles, each a little definition of herself. - May also raise her ACTUAL hand on Zoom calls <guilty>. 🍸 Raise your tiny, plastic cocktails in honor of all the Weird Barbies out there! <Narrator's Note: This post is dedicated to Mattel, Inc. PLEASE make an origin story movie of Weird Barbie. I would be happy to consult as a real life Weird Barbie...just like surgeons consult on Grey's Anatomy. Basically the same.>

When typewriters became popular, people loved them. But making typos was a problem everyone faced. Bette Nesmith Graham was a determined assistant who knew the frustration of a simple typo. This was combined with a tough boss and a young son to support. She couldn’t afford to lose her job because of little mistakes, so she looked for a solution. She created liquid paper - today we know it as Tippex - a fluid to fix typing mistakes. Starting from her small garage, Graham's business grew quickly. This invention not only saved her job - until her boss found out about the business and fired her - it also made her a millionaire. She eventually sold her company to the Gillette Corporation in 1979. Due to numerous small mistakes, Tipp-Ex's rise from an idea to a well-known name demonstrates the importance of innovation and out-of-the-box thinking. It shows how something as simple as white correction fluid, when framed and positioned as a solution for those who desperately need it, can achieve remarkable success. #brandinnovation #creativity #thisisfst

High-Stakes Commercial Litigator and Trial Lawyer at Markowitz Herbold | Creator of When You Need to Win Video Series
It’s time for Season 2 of my When You Need to Win video series! This episode is about an issue that was on my mind during my trial last month between Odell Beckham Jr. and Nike: - Ditching the arguments you don’t believe in. Unless you’re a sociopath or a highly skilled actor, you can’t hide it when you don’t believe the words that are coming out of your mouth. Research shows that when you don’t believe what you’re saying (or you’re just lying), it’s written all over your facial expressions, gestures, tone, and body language. And people pick up on it on a subconscious level, killing your credibility. Not to reinforce the stereotype, but lawyers do this in court all the time. They make arguments they think they need to make or to see what sticks. During trial last month, there was a component of my case that, as the evidence came in, I just didn’t feel we were right about. But I still didn’t think there was liability for it. For closing argument, I decided to just level with the jury about my concern. I told them flat out that this was the hardest part of my case and that it made me feel uncomfortable. But then I explained why it didn’t really matter. We won on the claim. Was that the difference maker? Maybe not. But it kept my credibility in check and I knew I’d maintained my integrity. So leave the arguments you don’t really believe on the cutting room floor, and find the ones you think are right. They’re always there. #whenyouneedtowin #litigation #commerciallitigation #triallawyers

It is a truth universally acknowledged that every family has only one designated photographer and if that’s you, guess what, you will NOT appear in your holiday reel unless you have taken a selfie (cue massive face/selfie-stick humiliation) OR you have rigged up an elaborate, potentially phone screen shattering camera timer. It’s annoying right? Until now. 📸💥👀 Ever defiant and with necessity being the mother of invention, I have discovered the sticker capability on my Apple iPhone so here I am, together with my family. Like a weird omniscient voyeur; the giant kraken of The Lakes… But isn’t it a bit that way at work too? There are so many people who feature and contribute on a daily basis but feel (and often are) unseen. They might be less experienced employees or new starters, they might simply be in positions without decision-making authority or support staff keeping the wheels on. But equally and this is a problem many law firms face, they might be people from marginalised groups, individuals from underrepresented backgrounds. My #MondayMotivation is to continue to ensure that all voices are represented, respected and heard. No one wants to look back through history and find they weren’t in some way visible and present. We all have a part to play in changing that. Who will you connect with today? Whose opinion or world view might you seek? Who will you give a voice to? #MondayMotivation #PeopleMatter #BeSeen #PeopleDriven Higgs LLP [📸 Image of my family at The Lakes and me, superimposed at the top of a hill - giving my best selfie smile.]

I was once sensitive about this topic. “How do I communicate with creative people?” Cries erupt from my chest – “But we speak the same language!” Hearing this used to bother me. I didn’t need to be handled with kid gloves. But nowadays I take this question as a positive sign. It shows that some people try to make me feel at ease. I'll happily respond in kind! Here are a few hints for interacting with creative people: #SpeakPlainly Speak about your creative challenge as you would with friends. #FirstTheProblem Let’s deal with the problem first and then we’ll find a solution. #BeHonestWithFeedback It doesn’t hurt my feelings. Actually, it is very helpful. Now that you can communicate with creative people, let’s solve your creative challenges! What challenges do you have?

For real though... why didn’t she tell us this!! Barbie always made careers and work look easy with simply the change of an outfit. Of course, in the movie, reality smacks her in the face when she gets to experience that the challenges and complexities of real life are far from her idealised existence. Our job searches are filled with real emotions, growth, and, sometimes, hard-hitting truths. The constant striving for perfection, the realisation that the professional world isn't always fair, and the need to adapt. It’s not just about landing a job; it's about navigating the real challenges of job searching, from facing rejections to understanding the nuances of workplace dynamics. Barbie learns to embrace the joys and pains of real life, and you, too, can find a balance in your job search journey. Embracing the ups and downs, learning from each experience, and growing beyond the confines of our own 'Barbieland' expectations. Like Barbie, you are more than just your resume and job title. You are an evolving, growing individual seeking not just a role, but a meaningful place in the world. Maybe she will talk about this in the next Barbie movie?
