Sociallyin is the 2nd company that I’ve worked for more than 2 years in my entire career. At this point, I’ve finally realized why there are some employees who just refused to work anywhere else. It’s because once you’ve found a company that: 1. Treats you with respect 2. Cares about your well-being 3. Compensate you a fair amount 4. Challenges you to go above and beyond 5. Encourages you to be better and the best in your field 6. Provides you amazing co-workers and bosses that supports each other You just can’t imagine yourself working anywhere else. You just can’t imagine leaving your family behind. I know there’s some stigma about calling a company you’re working for a family but I believe this with every fiber of my being, that I’ve finally found a company that I truly consider as my 2nd family.

That's equivalent to two full-time positions! 💡😳 We face criticism from all sides, with stereotypes and double standards dictating how we should act as both a parent and a professional. “Eric, what was working in Higher Ed like?” This old Facebook post, whenever it resurfaces, is a good reminder. Why was I cursed at multiple times? Well - it was - 1) Because we didn’t have virtual tours on our website 2) I was confirming the student’s state of residence to understand if they were guaranteed housing based on our out of state housing policy It was also the day before a long holiday weekend and the day of one of my best friend’s and co-worker’s weddings. Now that I am out of that life, I am still incredibly sensitive to how customers treat me. Sure, we all have bad days, but it doesn’t mean common decency goes out the window. And although the woman remained anonymous - how was I supposed willingly offer help in the future should she call again? In the business to customer relationship - respect needs to go both ways. As a Director of Operations responsible for managing a consulting team - it’s important we understand peoples’ communication styles and set appropriate boundaries to avoid situations like this one. And my team knows I have their back should a client, vendor or partner ever cross their line. Because putting up with disrespectful language and behavior is not “the cost of doing business.” I would rather support and empower my team to develop confrontation skills and build the resilience to directly address situations like this - - rather than provide guidance on how to grow a thicker skin. #Respect #Civility #professionalism #HR #HRconsulting

This is such an important story to share. It made me reflect on job postings where companies ask for 'resilience' in job specs. For me, resilience is built over time and through experience. We all experience set backs in life and I've always believed that it's through your hard times that you experience your greatest growth as a person. You face adversity, you learn, you grow, you bounce back and you apply a little bit more knowledge when you face the next scenario. The APA describes resilience as the following: It’s having the mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and ability to adjust to both internal and external demands. Resilience empowers you to accept and adapt to a situation and move forward, Sood says. “[It’s] the core strength you use to lift the load of life.” Makes perfect sense right? I think a question all employers should be asked in interviews however is this: What does resilience mean to you as an organisation? What do you put in place to support and champion building resilience in your team? If having 'resilience' as an employee means tolerating relentless weeks and months of constant pressure, back to back pointless meetings, working through lunch breaks, excessive workloads without proper support, being expected to take on more work despite already being at max capacity then I'm sorry, everyone has a break point. Asking for resilience in an employee shouldn't be about being able to push them to a point of no return. How you model resilience for your employees as an organisation is far more important than what you say about it. Talk is great but we all know how that story ends.

As some of us grow in our careers, the anticipated freedom of being a boss often gives way to a sense of looming obligation and crowded calendars of commitments. There’s never a shortage of people asking for a “few minutes of your time”, events that might be interesting to join, old contacts who might be nice to reconnect with. I often return to the wisdom of Derek Sivers: When deciding whether to do something, if you feel anything less than “Wow! That would be amazing! Absolutely! Hell yeah!” — then say no. When you say no to most things, you leave room in your life to really throw yourself completely into that rare thing that makes you say “HELL YEAH!” Of course, as responsible adults, there are many commitments that we really must juggle. It’s not a real “choice” – it’s what we’ve signed up for as professionals, parents, spouses, friends. But for the discretionary stuff – and admit it, a lot is discretionary – step away from your pros vs. cons calculations and get back to your gut: are you truly excited about something? If not, let it pass and keep that time liberated for the next big “hell yeah.” (Thanks to Liz Fosslien for the image)

“You know, Anne, sometimes I just want to throw in the towel, move to the country and leave it behind. I think I want this next step but I also feel totally overwhelmed. What am I supposed to do?” My client posed this question a few months ago. She’s a working mom, who is putting in the time to find her own way through this journey.   As she thought about the next step in her career, she found herself bouncing around in extremes. Both wanting more and wanting to walk away out of overwhelm and fear... So what did we do? First, we got curious- where are some of those possibilities coming from? What is hers and what belongs to others? What part of this is simply reflecting the burnout culture at so many workplaces? Or a reflection of the expectations that mothers also be perfect homemakers? What part reflects her desire for more meaning in her life? What part is about that feeling impossible? Only once we labeled and separated from all of the external voices she carried, could we start thinking more clearly about what SHE wants in all of this. We were able to talk about values, skills, and desire before moving into creating new behaviors to practice, as she thought about a next step that works for her. And guess what? She just received an offer for a new job, with a higher title and a higher salary. She was able to use our work to negotiate for that money, and recognize her non-negotiables around working parent life in her new position. She is feeling excited about the next step and more capable of getting the help that she needs to make it happen with her family too. Just this week, I helped a friend by watching her child so she could tackle a make-or-break customer call. As a sales pro under pressure after a short maternity leave, she needed everything to go perfectly. And of course, the universe had other plans. She started the call with a lighthearted apology, explaining the kindergarten was closed due to staffing issues and her little one was napping—though she warned that if a tantrum erupted, her backup plan (aka me) might not survive the battle! Yet, despite the chaos, she handled it all with humor and professionalism, just as I knew she would. Me too by the way. But let's be real: this kind of extra stress is exactly what a mother—and a brilliant female employee—doesn’t need! Balancing a full-time career and motherhood has always been like juggling flaming swords—except today’s world somehow adds more flames! I’ve been there, racing through meetings, deadlines, and an endless to-do list, all while trying to stay sane. Looking back, I’m so thankful for the support I had from my bosses, who understood that flexibility and balance aren’t optional—they’re essential. That kind of support made all the difference. Unfortunately, not everyone was so understanding. Surprisingly, some of the biggest challenges came from colleagues without kids who didn’t quite get it. It wasn’t easy, but I pushed through. I learned resilience, set boundaries, and, most importantly, made it through the fire! To all the working mums out there: Keep going!
