We hear a lot about the importance of studying the Great Lakes “ecosystem” – the network of aquatic plants and animals, their habitats, and the environmental conditions in which they live – and how all these pieces interact to move energy around the ecosystem. But what about knowledge ecosystems? People and institutions interact in important ways, and knowledge must move within these networks and structures if we are to come up with solutions to pressing environmental issues. Many barriers block the exchange and application of knowledge, such as scientific research results being inaccessible to managers, or political or social forces preventing changes in policy and practice. This leads to a phenomenon called the “knowledge-action gap.” The Science Transfer Program seeks to bridge the knowledge-action gap by transforming Great Lakes scientific knowledge into formats that are more useful for fishery managers and decision-makers, and by connecting knowledge users and knowledge producers to build relationships and to co-produce knowledge that is more relevant and actionable. Attending IMCC: International Marine Conservation Congress? I'll be presenting on the last day! Many early career marine scientists report that they *want* to perform conservation relevant research, but that they do not know how to effectively do this. This is often because of a lack of understanding of how science is used by conservation advocates and policymakers, or even a lack of understanding of the conservation and natural resources management policymaking process in general. As a result, many well-intentioned scientists spend years performing work that is functionally useless to conservation. Here we present practical, actionable advice from survey responses from natural resources managers, conservation advocates, and scientists with extensive experience performing policy-relevant research. We also present a novel, simple checklist for determining whether or not a given research project is indeed important for conservation and management.

We’re very excited to announce that Madlyn Carpenter will defend her Master’s thesis on Monday, July 8th. Madlyn is part of the Natural Infrastructure Graduate Fellowship, an educational initiative formed by the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems (IRIS) at the University of Georgia and Ducks Unlimited. Madlyn’s abstract: Wetlands provide ecosystem services such as reducing phosphorus (P) pollution and providing habitat for waterfowl. Lake Erie, one of the five Laurentian Great Lakes, suffers from harmful algal blooms in its western basin which are associated with P loading from the Maumee River Watershed (MRW). Some waterfowl populations in the MRW have declined significantly in recent decades. Ducks Unlimited (DU), a major partner in wetland conservation in the MRW, has identified a need for improved wetland restoration for meeting the dual goals of providing waterfowl habitat and improving water quality through P retention through site selection, design, and management. This research identified three objectives in support of these goals: 1) create subbasin prioritization maps for wetland restoration in the Great Lakes Region in accordance with DU’s high-priority criteria, 2) create a practical, intermediate complexity tool with minimal inputs to help practitioners probabilistically predict P retention, and 3) utilize the novel tool to test design and management scenarios for wetland performance to identify water management and design approaches that simultaneously improve P retention and waterfowl habitat suitability. Data from 249 wetlands with agricultural runoff as their primary pollutant of interest were input into a k-C model to generate P retention estimates, and waterfowl habitat suitability was assessed based on preferred foraging depths. Results show that active, dynamic management of water depth can help reduce tradeoffs between wetland objectives and that larger wetlands (2-7% of subbasin area) tend to outperform smaller wetlands in meeting both objectives.

Online Classroom, Integrated Catchment Management - Mapping River Corridors will take place on Thursday, 27th of June. The course focuses on the methodology developed to aid in the delineation of floodplain boundaries using morphological features to identify functional riparian zones - the end goal being to provide the basis for sustainable zoning policies that provide “room for the river” which in time allows river systems to return to a state of equilibrium with rich biodiversity, developed ecosystem service provision and resilience to future shocks such as climate change. Doing this will aid in meeting our objectives under the Water Framework and Floods Directives. The many benefits of delineating riparian lands are discussed and as well as the process for establishing the preferred assessment methodologies. Managing waterways involves deciding what should be valued, protected, or managed, which often relies on legislative requirements. However, it's clear this approach isn't effective, as seen in urban waterways both nationally and globally. Last month, Peter Davies and I published our proposed solution in the *Journal of Nature-based Solutions*. Our paper outlines a method to identify what’s valued in urban waterways and how to develop management strategies that enhance urban aquatic and riparian ecosystems.
