Helping Finance Directors drive business performance through innovation | Executive Coaching for Finance Leaders | Future of Finance | Ex-Microsoft FD
📈 Three key things that’ll take you from being finance director to CFO material… And before you say it, yes there’s a lot of crossover! But there are very specific differences between these two roles - other than seniority. 💭 1: Strategic thinking World class FD’s get promoted for being great at execution (very important!). But CFOs need a mindset shift to strategy first, execution second. It normally takes about 6-12 months to make that pivot. 🗣 2: Dealing with external folks We're talking about the CEO, board, rest of the management team, investors and shareholders. These people want the CFO’s strategic point of view on where the business is going - and you have to be able to communicate your thoughts on this really well. 🤝 3: Mergers and acquisitions A chicken and egg situation because it’s HARD to get experience in this without being at CFO level. But essentially this is thinking about “What would it look like to add something else in or take something out of the organisation?” Being able to see things from an external perspective in these situations is critical. There’s SO much more to say on this that I can’t possibly cover in one post! What would you add here? I’d love to chat more if you’re an FD looking to make that leap up to CFO and this resonates, drop me a DM. #financedirector #CFO #financecareers

Interesting. As with most things in life, there are many different but valuable perspectives on the role of a CFO. I believe that the ability to flex between these archetypes and know which role to play in a given situation is the most distinguishing quality.
