Plant breeding is the science of creating new varieties with traits (qualities) that will help crops grow more efficiently and healthily. 🔬🌾 For farmers, that could mean needing fewer inputs and resources, like fertilizers, pesticides, and water. These days, the public sector supports plant breeding in many ways. And they're not limited to the lab or a research field. “Our role goes beyond just performing science; it involves ensuring that our innovations reach the market and benefit the agricultural sector,” says François Eudes, our Director of Research, Development and Technology in Alberta and the national lead for breeding innovations. As technology evolves and new challenges emerge, public sector plant breeders must continuously innovate, using cutting-edge new tools to stay ahead of the curve. “Maintaining our capacity in a changing world is crucial, just like a producer who updates their seeding system. If they hadn’t changed over the past 30 or 40 years, they wouldn’t be as advanced as they are today,” says research scientist Henry De Gooijer. In addition to carrying out the science and funding new innovations, the public sector must collaborate closely with industry to bring much-needed products to market. For crops that may be less profitable to private investors, it’s up to the public sector to fill in the gaps, ensuring that Canada’s producers are well-supported in the wide spectrum of crops grown across the nation. I’m very happy to announce that our work on paired bacterial interactions in pL-droplets was finally published in Nature Communications! The result of a collaborative effort with Isaline Lucille Guex, Helena Todorov, Jordan Vacheron, Clara Margot Heiman, and the Vorholt lab; but also the first milestone in our journey to better understand how consortia of bacteria assemble in fragmented micro-scaled environments (such as in the soil)! Find the publication on the following link: https://lnkd.in/eVXAWafv The image below illustrates one of the bacterial combinations tested in pL-droplets: two strains of Pseudomonas protegens - CHA0 (green) and Pf-5 (magenta) - after 15h of competitive growth for succinate in droplets. The infrequent production of tailocin particles by CHA0 leads to the selective lysis of Pf-5 cells in a small proportion of droplet habitats and to the localized dominance of CHA0 - an effect undetectable in standard batch liquid cultures!
