Is it time for Cannes Lions to have a Multicultural Category? Like many of you, every year when I leave the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, I leave inspired. And since I’ve had the honor to judge a few times in my career, I’m always challenged to do my part to move the industry forward. First, I would like to give credit where credit is due. Cannes Lions has done well when it comes to supporting and encouraging diversity and inclusion, especially for people of color. This year I saw more folks that looked like me strolling La Croisette than ever before. This is thanks in part to Inkwell founder, Adrianne Smith and the Cannes Do Initiative, and recently Peter Ukhurebor of BLK@ and Imani Laners’ The Impact of Color Cannes.  Kudos when it comes to agencies, brands and companies bringing in talent from the entertainment, music and sports industries respectively. But with all of that, I find it lacking in The Work itself. At the end of the day, isn’t that what we are celebrating? Having a dedicated multicultural category would go a long way to set the stage for more entries that have truly targeted multicultural creative, strategic consumer insights, PR, media, activations and data executions. This also applies to the opportunity for multicultural agencies, brands and media companies that unceremoniously contribute so much to the industry, to be seen on the world stage. Many Bronze, Silver, Gold and even Grand Prix Lions have been taken home that have borrowed, tapped into or have been influenced by trends that were created from multicultural communities. A Carrot named Cannes ! First of all, Congratulations to every winner, every shortlist and every entrant at Cannes 2024. The festival of creativity is not what is celebrated at The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. It starts the moment you get that one thought that sprouts as a potential idea which you want to share and wait for it to be accepted. And then when you take efforts to sell the idea to your client. Making sure the idea is executed, refined and crafted to perfection. When you spend days and nights perfecting the case presentation. Then eagerly wait for the competition to be thrown open for entry. Finally looking for the right category to be entered in and then looking forward to the shortlist announcement. From the day you get the idea to the day you get the results, every moment is a celebration of creativity. From ideation to appreciation to acceptance to approvals to execution to submission, every milestone is a celebration. And just after the festival, the race will start. To hunt the Lion next June. No matter how many Lions you bring to your shelf, the Lions never cease to attract you. Every Lion home is a reason for bringing the other Lion home. It’s not about why you didn’t get the Lion this year, It’s about how long can you feed the Lion in you and keep it alive. Because the blood you tasted will keep on feeding the Lion of your dreams. It will never dry. The Lion will chase the ideas in your veins and get it out without waiting for any brief. The Lion will roar and get the approvals. The Lion will not let you sleep. As long as the Lion is looking for it’s prey inside, you’ll continue to hunt. It takes a Lion to hunt a Lion. Cannes Lions Day 1: The first Grand Prix and Gold Lions have been awarded – so what do they tell us? Here are a few top-line thoughts from the opening day’s results in Lions Health, Outdoor, Print & Publishing and Audio & Radio: Big brands are back: Jury presidents made much of the fact that mega brands like Coke and Magnum have been producing outstanding work this year. The emphasis seems to have shifted towards ‘commercial creativity’ – rather than purpose for its own sake. Using creativity to drive business growth is absolutely on message at Lions 2024. Purpose moves centre stage: That said, there are also some potent examples of how purpose can become part of the commercial heart of a campaign. Coca Cola’s Recycle Me and Pedigree’s Adoptable both placed purpose at the centre of their winning campaigns. AI is already making its mark: Lions Juries don’t like tech for tech’s sake – but they do admire a clever AI-powered campaign. Siemens’ success in Pharma with Magnetic Stories - and an Outdoor Grand Prix for Pedigree’s adorable Adoptable - are powerful advocates for mashing AI together with great creativity. Shared success: There was plenty of success on day one for entries from the Middle East, India and Latin America. BBDO Dubai’s Child Wedding Cards looks like it will be one of the week’s high impact success stories, after picking up a Grand Prix on day one. Laughter is the best medicine: The Cannes Lions team let it be known that humour would be celebrated this year – and early award winners have shown this to be the case. Specsavers’ Misheard Version and Dramamine’s The Last Barf Bag are both worth checking out if you want to see how humour can lift even the most unlikely products and services. As Jefferson Starship might plausibly have said: “We built this city on sausage rolls”. Looking forward to a fascinating day two, with numerous entertainment and craft awards up for grabs.
