Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Communications Strategist I Workshop Facilitator I Speaker I Co-author I Coach
It's our duty as #communicators to prepare our workplace culture with information and resources to help them navigate their jobs, teams, and performance and that includes navigating what's going on in the greater society. People bring all of it to their jobs every day. But when U.S. organizations say nothing when there's something as impactful as the U.S. election, it can feel gaslight-y to employees. Most organizations traditionally start with the default of not saying anything about social issues and have to be convinced or pressured to say something which often leads to performative communications. This approach is outdated and does not serve employees who are asking for acknowledgement and guidance when something's hit the fan. Civility, respect, and appreciation - not polarization - around differences is needed. It's time we build the skills to flip the script and set our default to saying something using criteria that will help guide what, when, who, and how we say something. Doesn't meet the criteria? Then we don't say anything, but let's not start there. This was an impetus for The DEPTH Model introduced in The Conscious Communicator: The fine art of not saying stupid sh*t. Mike Klein FIIC, FCSCE, SCMP and I collaborated on this article talking about seeding civility in the workplace which starts with acknowledgment as the U.S. heads towards the November election. Mike even drafted an acknowledgment for you to start from in the article. Thank you Mike and thank you Strategic for publishing to amplify and support communication professionals. #InternalCommunications #EmployeeCommunications #DEICommunications
