@RenewableEnergyWorld with an article on DTE's estimates of infrastructure needs to service just a part of southeast MI's EV charging needs. Multiply this across every utility and state, and we start to get the picture of the (deferred) grid upgrades needed to support electrification including EV charging. "DTE: Nearly $2B in EV charging infrastructure needed by 2028 to service Southeast Michigan Hundreds of thousands of new electric vehicle (EV) chargers will need to be built over the next several years to service Southeast Michigan, DTE Energy (DTEE) said in its latest Transportation Electrification Plan (TEP), but the utility won’t front the whole cost of the estimated nearly $2 billion investment it says is required to meet its service area’s EV charging needs by 2028." Happy to share our recent work on evaluating flexibility values of electric vehicles published in Nature Communications. Flexibility has become increasingly important considering the intermittency of variable renewable energy in low-carbon energy systems. Electrified transportation exhibits great potential to provide flexibility. This article developed a cross-scale energy optimization framework to quantitatively evaluate the comparative advantages of the two pathways of transportation electrification, i.e., battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in terms of their flexibility values under various scenarios influenced by different technologies and energy policies. https://lnkd.in/eu8BYWR5

There’s a new opportunity for electric motor industry players! Electric motors now have a HUGE role to play in energy storage systems, particularly in batteries, that are making renewable energy integration possible. And this can be a huge opportunity for industry as well. How? Let’s see 👇 1. Electric motors are highly efficient at converting electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa. When renewable energy sources such as solar or wind generate electricity, it's important to store this energy efficiently for later use. 2. Renewable energy sources are often intermittent, producing energy based on weather conditions or sunlight availability. Electric motors in energy storage systems act as stabilisers, balancing the fluctuations in energy production and demand. 3. Electric motors enhance the integration of renewable energy into the grid by providing a means to store excess energy during peak production periods. This stored energy can then be utilised during peak demand times or when renewable energy generation is low. 4. Energy storage systems equipped with electric motors offer flexibility and scalability, allowing for the efficient utilisation of renewable energy resources. I think this is the new area where industry is focusing, and new players should keep an eye on this too. What are your thoughts about the electric motor’s role in the energy storage system? 🤔 #motor #motorindustry #motorman #sustainable #polltime #technology #collaboration

GKN Automotive signs virtual power purchase agreement • GKN Automotive said it had signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with global renewable energy developer and subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc., Recurrent Energy. • The 10 year agreement would cover 65% of the supplier's European electricity load and 30% of its global load as part of a commitment to using 50% renewable electricity globally by 2025 and 75% by 2030. • The joint agreement would establish The Rey I project, a new large scale solar farm in Spain which would contribute towards the increased supply of renewable electricity to the Spanish grid. • The project would facilitate the supply of approximately 200,000 MWh of renewable electricity to the European grid annually, reaching approximately 2m MWh over the 10-year agreement. • GKN Automotive would receive Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) equivalent to 65% of its European 2023 electricity usage. • This development is a key step in the company’s SBTi-approved targets to reduce its direct Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 45% by 2030 and achieve net zero across its entire value chain by 2045. • GKN Automotive is planning further VPPAs across Europe and South America. #automotive #supplier #europe
