✨ Encouraged, inspired, refreshed - in a way that only my pharmily can offer. 🧠 These coming days will be filled with reflections on the refreshers and new lessons I’ve learned at great volume these past couple days. My brain is buzzing with information gathered through the intensive ASCP co-hosted geriatric boot camp, expert lectures and forums hosted and taught by fellow American Pharmacists Association members on topics from trauma and substance abuse disorder to pharmacy deserts, immunization, AI, and more, and attendance to forums on workforce conditions that illuminate to me priorities, desires, and resources for various challenges and opportunities in different factions of pharmacy (will elaborate more later). 💕Moreover, I am reveling in the lessons bestowed on me through more intimate gatherings and conversations…and all the love I felt through hugs and expressions of genuine interest shared between people who have taught me how to be a better person throughout the years. People who lead by example, with integrity, courage, and grace - qualities I’m still working on and learning how to flex in different contexts, and have been attempting to pass along to the residents, fellows, students, and peers who I’m fortunate to precept or encounter by chance. ✈️ I depart Orlando brimming with gratitude and pride to be a pharmacist. I hope for those considering pharmacy, or who may be struggling with the profession, to think about possibly joining pharmacy associations, like APhA and ASCP, who are focused on YOU, the HUMAN pharmacy practitioner, in addition to offerings for clinical, research, and professional development. 🌽 Okay, this A LOT, and possibly corny beyond words, so I can stop here with a confirmation that APhA succeeded in invigorating hope and passion in the pharmacy side of me. Thank you so much, APhA team and pharmacy peers! Until next time 👋 #pharmacy #aphaannual2024 #inspiration #professionaldevelopment #reflections

The results of the EMBARK Trial released in the June Issue of Diabetes Care are in! As a Diabetes Educator who participated in this trial, I had a first-hand experience of the three different approaches used in this study to address diabetes distress and glucose levels for adults living with type 1 diabetes. I am excited to share the study findings with you. But, before I describe the study results, there is a spoiler alert - The research results might compel you to adjust your practice approach. The year I spent coaching study participants in the Embark Trial caused a significant change in my approach to diabetes self-management coaching. The final results of this trial will alter my approach forever. Lead Clinical Pharmacist | Pharmacist Education Supervisor | Clinical Negligence | Project Management | Learning & Development | Root Cause Analysis |
I may not have been able to turn the lights off in solidarity today, due to my workplace location and public impact. But I can help spread the word. We need to be a solid profession standing up for our value to society, the healthcare system, as a clinical profession in its own right. We need to be solid to ensure positive outcomes for patients and effective support for GP practices in local communities: 1. **Patient Safety**: A strong pharmacy profession ensures vigilant management of drug interactions, side effects, and correct dosages, maintaining high standards of patient safety despite decentralisation. 2. **Healthcare Accessibility**: A solid profession guarantees that essential healthcare advice, screenings, and immunisations provided by pharmacists remain readily available, enhancing support for GP practices and benefiting underserved areas. 3. **Medication Management**: With increasing medication use for chronic diseases, a robust pharmacy profession ensures pharmacists effectively manage complex regimens, improving adherence and health outcomes within local communities. 4. **Public Health**: Pharmacists play a crucial role in disease prevention and health education. A strong profession ensures these contributions remain impactful, promoting wellness and preventing disease spread, thus supporting GP practices in public health initiatives. 5. **Economic Efficiency**: A stable pharmacy profession helps prevent medication errors and optimise drug therapy, contributing to cost-effective healthcare and relieving pressure on GP practices. 6. **Advancing Medical Knowledge**: Pharmacists' involvement in research and new drug development ensures continued medical advancements, providing innovative therapies and supporting GP practices with the latest treatment options. 7. **Regulatory and Ethical Standards**: A solid pharmacy profession upholds high regulatory and ethical standards, maintaining public trust and ensuring consistent quality of care across all service models. Overall, a strong pharmacy profession is essential for maintaining effective, efficient, and safe healthcare services, enhancing support for GP practices, and delivering positive outcomes for patients in local communities. We just need to be funded correctly to deliver this effectively. Let’s stop the closures and pay pharmacies properly.

From a fellow PharmD Jay Weaver, PharmD, MPH . Why are the children in the U.S the most at risk for medication errors? They have no safety net. We need CHANGE. I held off on this post until I was a bit more dispassionate with my comments. My 11 year old (60 lb) child recently tested positive for influenza and was prescribed generic Tamiflu by a Physicians Assistant. The dose prescribed was twice the adult dose (two capsules twice daily). This means it would have been an overdose for an adult much less a child who is small for his age. A pharmcist at one of the country’s largest chain drug stores filled the order. Didn’t do a dose check. Didn’t flag the prescription. They simply sent it home with me (the parent). Since one of the parents happens to be a pharmcist, the issue was caught. it happened to be my week with him. This isn’t the first time that pharacists at this nation chain have mis-dosed one of my children (different location). Last time the pharmacist asked me to go speak with the nurse practitioner rather than calling himself. I’m mad at the chain. I’m mad at the pharmacists for filling, I’m mad at the mid-level practitioners (nurse practitioners and PAs) who have written these prescriptions. How many non-pharmacist parents get these bad prescriptions every day and have no idea. We have to do better. Cheers to people like Jena Quinn, PharmD, BCPPS who are working to find pediatric prescription problems and solve them. Jeers to those who lack appropriate rigor in the prescribing and filling of prescriptions for children. #patientsafety

What is the impact of including patient partners in health research? This article from a project in #NewBrunswick is an excellent example of patient-oriented research: "Patient partners engaged in the research helped Dr. Goodine realize that discharge was not the right time to overwhelm patients by teaching them about their medications. The research has now shifted to look at what information pharmacists need to share with patients, how, and when." We were excited to support this project and promote the opportunity for patient engagement! Read more about the patient partners involved:
