Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently signed a four-year collaboration agreement with the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP) at Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), focused on accelerating quantum computing hardware research. I think one of the challenges of quantum education-for-industry is to raise awareness of the field of quantum computing, and career pathways available, to those with backgrounds in STEM fields outside physics. Also communicating the significant amount of "classical" physics and engineering involved in many of the important roles for making progress in the technology. The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) hackathon mentioned in the article was a lot of fun and a great way to explore the challenges of connecting quantum algorithms with commercial use-cases, as well as networking, would recommend taking part to anyone looking to explore quantum computing!

There need to be more quantum programs in higher education, and, I would say, in primary and middle schools as well. The demand from the quantum industry for skilled workers will outpace the number of PhD and Master's students if more programs are not offered. The University of Calgary noticed this and started a Professional Masters in Quantum Computing this semester. There is also a demand for upskilling existing fields to enter the quantum workforce. As well businesses, C-Suite, governments, investors, etc. will need to learn about the threats and opportunities that come with quantum (not just computing). This is why Katanya B. Kuntz, PhD and I formed Qubo Consulting Corp., to fill in this knowledge gap that exists and help to grow the global quantum ecosystem ⚛🌱 .

Quantum computing hasn't taken the world by storm yet. However, many experts predict that it'll become much more mainstream within the next decade. And I don't know about you... but a decade can fly by faster than we might expect. That's why it's so important that we start embracing quantum computing in higher education. By introducing quantum computing courses and research programs in higher education, institutions can play a crucial role in preparing the next generation of scientists, engineers, and computer scientists for the quantum era. Embracing quantum computing courses and degrees will lead to more graduates who are well-equipped to navigate the evolving tech landscape. What do you think about quantum computing in education?
