Crain's Chicago Business and John Pletz have the story today on what could become the biggest technology project in State of Illinois history. Gov. JB Pritzker and team are closing in on a $20 billion, 150-acre quantum computing campus in the Chicago area. The campus would be anchored by PsiQuantum, a Silicon Valley startup seeking to build the world’s first industrial-scale quantum computer that will usher in the next frontier of technology: applying the principles of quantum mechanics to computing. This tech holds the promise of an exponential leap in computing capability that can be used to model everything from cancer to climate change. Chicago Swag Fermi Lab in suburban Batavia Swing for the fences back Bad thing is this is ‘Terminator’ scale intelligence like a nuke Quantum Leap in Chicago The country's first utility-scale quantum computer is slated to be built on the site of a former steel mill in Chicago's South Side, Mayor Brandon Johnson said yesterday. The computer is part of a broader $9B quantum research campus projected to potentially bring $20B in investment and 175,000 jobs over the coming decades. Quantum computers can surpass even the most powerful supercomputers available today, improving encryption and expediting development of new drugs (see more, w/video). Silicon Valley startup PsiQuantum's facility will use photons—particles of light—to perform calculations, an approach not yet commercially proven. This comes in contrast to techniques relying on ultracold atoms or superconducting circuits used in existing quantum computers by Google, IBM, and others. The 300,000-square-foot facility will become the anchor tenant of the proposed Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, a new vision for the abandoned steel mill there (see history). The project, one of the earliest public-private partnerships for quantum computing in the US, will see roughly $500M in public investment from federal, state, and city budgets.

More exciting news for Australia's quantum industry! The Australian Government has awarded A$18.4 million to the University of Sydney to establish an Australian Centre for Quantum Growth. The consortium includes government-funded bodies such as the CSIRO and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems, industry groups including Silicon Quantum Computing and QuintessenceLabs, and the leading universities in the country. Quantum Australia will run the centre and drive innovation and commercialisation of quantum technologies. Great news in the #quantumcomputing world today. In conjunction with Quantinuum's release of its 56-qubit H2-1 #quantum computer, we are excited to also announce that a joint team from Quantinuum, JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s Global Technology Applied Research, Argonne National Laboratory and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) ran a Random Circuit Sampling (RCS) #quantumalgorithm, achieving a remarkable 100x improvement over prior industry results and setting a new world record for the cross-entropy benchmark. The fidelity achieved in our RCS experiment shows unprecedented system-level performance for a quantum computer, making it increasingly difficult for today’s most powerful supercomputers and other quantum computing architectures to match this result. We are excited to leverage this high fidelity to advance the field of #quantumalgorithms for industrial use cases broadly, and financial use cases in particular.
