[This was a real interaction during my time at Uber] Employee: "Farah, you work in HR right?" Me: "Sort of, recruiting is a function of HR but I focus on hiring talent not focused on employee relations. Why?" Employee: "Well, I have this issue with my manager..." Me: "OH! Nope sorry! Not me! Please speak with your HR Business Partner. That's their function." Lets clear up some misconceptions about HRBPs and Recruiters. In come companies, especially smaller ones, they combine both the HRBP and Recruiting role because its more cost effective since there may not be as much of a hiring need and HRs scope can be very broad. However, the larger a company gets, they often split up these functions along with other HR responsibilities for example Total Rewards or Employee Relations. Here's the breakdown of the key differences between a Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) and a Recruiter: Focus: Recruiter: Focuses on attracting, screening, and selecting qualified candidates to fill open positions. Their expertise lies in finding the best fit for a specific role within a timeframe. HRBP: Acts as a strategic partner to a specific business unit within the company. Their focus is broader, encompassing employee relations, performance management, talent development, and ensuring HR policies and practices align with the business unit's goals. Employee Lifecycle Stage: Recruiter: Primarily interacts with candidates at the beginning of the employee lifecycle, during the recruitment and hiring process. HRBP: Interacts with employees throughout their entire lifecycle at the company, from onboarding to exit interviews. Skills and Expertise: Recruiter: Needs strong sourcing and screening skills, knowledge of recruitment marketing and employer branding, and the ability to build relationships with potential candidates. HRBP: Requires a broader range of skills, including knowledge of employment law, performance management practices, compensation and benefits, and business acumen. They also need strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Collaboration: Recruiter: Works closely with hiring managers to understand their needs and identify suitable candidates. HRBP: Collaborates with various stakeholders across the business unit, including leadership, managers, and employees, to address their people-related challenges and implement HR initiatives. Here's an analogy to illustrate the difference: Think of a Recruiter as a Talent Scout: They search for promising talent and bring them to the team's attention. Think of an HRBP as a Coach: They help the team develop their existing talent, address challenges, and create a winning environment. Both HRBPs and Recruiters play crucial roles in building a strong workforce, but their areas of focus and expertise differ.
