Yorùbá Linguist | writer and editor | language/grammar coach | NLP enthusiast | Research Assistant | Dataset Annotator | Translator/Interpreter
As a first class graduate of linguistics who got a distinction in their final project, I've had many students come to me, feeling lost and uncertain about their final year project. They've said things like: "I don't know how to get started, I feel so overwhelmed!" "I'm not sure what my supervisor wants from me, I don't want to disappoint them!" "I've been researching for weeks, but I still don't feel like I understand my topic!" If you're feeling like these students, know that you're not alone! I've seen many students struggle with these same concerns, but with some guidance and support, they've gone on to produce outstanding work. Let me share some advice that I've given to these people, which has helped them navigate their long essay journey. 1. Always listen to your supervisor(s): I remember one student, Oyin, who was hesitant to make changes to her draft. But once she embraced my feedback, her work transformed, and she wrote an excellent project. 2. Ask questions, make research: I recall another student, Jesuloluwa, who was struggling to understand his topic. But once he started asking questions and delving deeper into his research, his confidence grew, and his project took shape. 2. Study research works related to your topic: Deborah, a student who was passionate about her subject, immersed herself in relevant studies and literature reviews. Her final project was outstanding, and she even got a distinction in her final year project! By following these tips and building a strong student-supervisor relationship, you'll be well on your way to producing a fantastic final year project or thesis. Remember, your supervisor is there to support you, they are not your enemy and by working together, you can achieve great things!

The Second Language Effect? As those close to me know, I’m always diving into research on various topics. Today’s find is particularly thought-provoking: a study exploring how making decisions in a second language impacts our psychology. Findings and Reflections: 1. Decisions made in a second language tend to be more utilitarian- people focus on the greater good, even when it involves difficult choices⚖️ 2. Speaking a foreign language creates emotional distance, leading us to be less driven by emotion and more by logic 🧠 3. This raises a compelling question- if language can influence our moral decisions, how adaptable are our ethical beliefs? Do our values change with context? 🌱 For those interested, here is the study:

🔍 Exploring the Depths of Linguistics: A Love Letter to Language 📚 As I reflect on my journey through the intricate labyrinth of linguistics, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude and passion for this captivating field. 💬💡 Linguistics isn't just about deciphering the structures and sounds of languages; it's a voyage into the very essence of human communication and cognition. Through my studies, I've delved deep into the workings of the human brain, unraveling the mysterious pathways that shape our understanding and expression of language. One of the most fascinating aspects of linguistics is its interdisciplinary nature. It intertwines seamlessly with psychology, neuroscience, anthropology, computer science, and more, offering a multifaceted perspective on the complexities of language. From syntax to semantics, phonetics to pragmatics, every facet of language reveals a new layer of insight into the human experience. It's through linguistics that we uncover the nuances of culture, identity, and society encoded within the words we speak and the languages we cherish. But perhaps what truly ignites my passion for linguistics is its endless capacity for discovery. With each linguistic puzzle I unravel, I find myself drawn deeper into the enigmatic tapestry of human communication, forever humbled by the vastness of linguistic diversity and the ingenuity of the human mind. As I continue on this journey, I am grateful for the opportunity to share my love for linguistics with fellow enthusiasts and scholars alike. Together, let us celebrate the beauty of language and the boundless possibilities it holds for understanding ourselves and the world around us. #Linguistics #Language #Communication #Cognition #Interdisciplinary #Discoveries #Passion #Gratitude #HumanExperience

Books: Engaging Children in Applied Linguistics Research: Pinter (2023): Who should speak for children in applied linguistics research? Should it be only adults, or is there room for children's perspectives and views as well? This pioneering book brings their voices to the forefront and shows that listening to children can open up new possibilities to conduct research with children rather than just on them. It covers a range of possibilities, from simply asking for children's perspectives to increasing levels of active participation, including adult-child partnership
