The Joint Production Accelerator Cell (JPAC), created by OSD A&S in early 2023, is tasked with providing actionable recommendations to increase the production capacity of specific weapon systems based on the evolving threat environment. Here's some good news: $5M in funding for JPAC's important work has been included in the recently proposed FY25 budget request. Here's what they'll be focusing on: 1) Initiate research efforts to assess opportunities to inject advanced, flexible, and scalable design and manufacturing techniques into DoD supply chains. 2) Evaluate previous and ongoing industry and Government efforts to identify, develop, inject, and scale advanced design and manufacturing approaches. 3) Assess opportunities to develop and scale alternate manufacturing techniques for critical munitions subcomponents including, but not limited to, ball bearings, artillery shell casings, and solid rocket motors. 4) Analyze opportunities and approaches to modernize production facilities to enable flexible and agile manufacturing, including digital engineering, advanced reductive manufacturing, additive manufacturing, and flexible/agile tooling. Assessments will seek to define tangible benefits to production and surge capacity, as well as associated costs and implementation timelines.

Did you all know we have a submarine maintenance crisis? I learned about it at an #additivemanufacturing conference last year, and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. According to a new report from the Congressional Research Service, nearly 40% of US fast-attack submarines are in repair or awaiting maintenance, as shipyards face a shortage of workers and supply chain issues. One session I am excited to sit in on at RAPID + TCT is Scott Kasen’s presentation on “Creating Distributed Production in the Submarine Industrial Base,” taking place on Tuesday, June 25, at 11:30 am PST in room 408 B. “Additive manufacturing, which is not a mainstream manufacturing capability in the Submarine Industrial Base (SIB) today, offers an opportunity for adding significant production capacity to conventional manufacturing supply chains for these hard‐to‐source parts. Today we'd like to introduce our Re-VAMMP program! In partnership with the United States Department of Defense, Virginia Tech, and ASTRO America, the Re-VAMMP program aims to increase the adoption of metal additive manufacturing of Virginia’s defense industrial base, particularly in small and medium size independent machine shops. Department of Defense depots, shipyards, and arsenals as well as its prime contractors rely heavily on independent machine shops with little modern infrastructure to manufacture parts for weapon systems. GENEDGE hopes to help these machine shops function as the backbone of the Defense manufacturing supply-chain. Re-VAMMP has 3 main goals: 👉Discover and define the requirements that the defense industrial base imposes on suppliers of metal AM parts. 👉Educate future manufacturers on Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM). 👉Drive adoption of metal AM by independent machine shops in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
