My blog this week was painful to write. We took on one of the Pubcos when the Pub Code (designed to protect tenants from restrictive practices put on them by large Pubcos) was new and we were a test case. It was a stressful time and part of me wishes we had gone further, but it was a costly affair! #reflectionsofareluctantlandlady #tiedpubs #pubcode #pubcos #problemsoftiedpubs #hospitalitymanagement

It's a been while, but it's Friday. Summer is on the horizon. I can say this when you can finally walk outside during a warm Chicago morning and layers are a thing of the past. Just typing this is a mistake; it will probably snow tomorrow. With this exciting time, comes events and festivals. Concerts, Lollapalooza, ball games, cookouts, they're all back. What's also back is the need to staff them appropriately. You ever been to a festival and the crowds outnumber the beer tents 4,000 to 1? Yeah me too, knowing full well I'll give them $18 for a tall boy of Budlight to be warm halfway through it. Covid was a huge set back for so many companies adjusting to public gatherings again. It took a while for many organizations to build back a confident roster of workers they could lean on. Some are still in this rebuilding process. This article does a great job of explaining the effects of short-staffed events. There's so many things to cover when you're preparing for them - food, music, ambience, etc. https://lnkd.in/gvTmnksG Don't let inadequate staff be an extra issue, especially when there is on-demand labor now to supplement it so easily. Uber for staffing? Yup, it's a thing, and I'm happy to shed light on it. #summer #events #baseball #staffing #festivals #concerts #beverages

In the heart of London, there's a pub that's been around since the 16th century. It's called The Cheshire Cheese. This pub is a living piece of history, and it never gets old. But how do they do it? How does a pub stick around for 500+ years? The answer: Tradition. The Cheshire Cheese has a set of practices that they follow to the tee. - Only serving real ale - Never putting prices up - No TVs, Music or WiFi - Low lighting - Old wooden furnishings - A menu of simple pub classics Sounds basic, right? But it's powerful. Customers come back year after year just to be a part of its history. When you're in the pub, it's easy to forget what year it is. But it's simple: when something's good, it never gets old. So whether you're a business owner, marketer, or employee, think about your own "traditions". What makes you unique? What are the things about you that always stays the same? Polish them up, and give the world something it can rely on. #tradition #business #history #London #pub

https://lnkd.in/eQETsQAu You'll see this headline in BBC News today, with lots of Yorkshire-based content: "Cash-Strapped Clubbers Make Their Nights Out Count" With data for thousands of live events (right now) across Yorkshire, at Yorkshire.com we have seen this to be true. Habits are changing and fast, but people are attending well produced live events more than ever. This often comes in place of spending that once was for other hospitality - like local pubs - and foreign holidays. Similar things are true of restaurants and domestic hotel stays: adding more space in between, people are saving and then going large. Operators who have adapted to these changes are just about managing. But it’s a very hard time to be in any of these sectors, as the market is shrinking as a result of these changes.

We’re given a wonderful array of social opportunities to share our experiences with others and enrich our experiences, all of these places are vital to a thriving community. There are plenty of ways to share your day with others that you can do for free, or for little increase in cost: volunteer at a theatre; ask your local pub if you can start a group to share an interest; support your independent local business for your essentials instead of the usual corporates. Make a pact to be actively engaged in your local hospitality and arts businesses, we miss them when they’re gone. There’s no such thing as JUST a bakery and coffee house…there’s a place for you to connect, support a different approach to our food economy, and make a difference to the lives of others. #humbleandwholebakery #socialenterprise #notforprofit #womeninbusiness #communitybusiness #welshfoodbusiness #foodanddrinkwales #organic #nofarmersnofood #socialmissionispossible

There is no such thing as JUST a pub, JUST a club, JUST a bar, JUST a restaurant, JUST a theatre, JUST a gig venue. Social activity is essential for our well-being. We need to protect these places for future generations.
