“I remember wondering why someone would pay me thousands of dollars for my advice, listen to it carefully and then completely ignore it and do something else.“ Highlights: 1. "The advice we receive from professionals is often counterintuitive. After all, if professionals only gave advice that was consistent with common practice or intuition, we wouldn’t need them. "When we’re faced with someone telling us to take an action we wouldn’t otherwise take we tend not to want to take it. That’s just human nature." 2. "What tended to determine whether they would take my advice was whether they trusted me. Had I laid the groundwork for a trusting professional-client relationship or had I ignored that foundation and rushed ahead to simply providing my opinion? "The truth is that in far too many cases, I’d simply done the latter. I hadn’t taken the time and effort to make sure that I knew and understood my client well enough to build their trust in me. And they would proceed to ignore my advice. "I don’t think I was alone in that behavior. Far too many professionals assume that, because they know what they’re talking about... and have extensive experience in an area, that their clients will automatically trust them... But real people don’t operate that way." 3. "They require a rapport and a relationship based on mutual respect if they are going to put their lives or livelihoods in a stranger’s hands. And many professionals are terrible at creating trust." 4. "To make matters worse, it seems that each profession has more than its share of people who seem to insist on doing either a bad job or even actively defrauding or harming their clients." 5. "I’m not saying that most, or even a lot, of professionals fall into these camps. But there are certainly enough of them to make the public justifiably wonder just how effective their chosen practitioner is." 6. "And that doesn’t even take into account the simple fact that, in a lot of professions, simply meeting a basic standard of competence is extraordinarily difficult." FINAL WORD: 1. "At the end of the day, we’re dealing with advice-givers who work in fields that are imperfectly regulated, contain an unacceptable number of bad actors, and require an extraordinary degree of skill and experience to be considered even borderline competent. "Is it any wonder that many people are hesitant to simply take advice in these areas without a heaping tablespoon of salt?" 2. "Do you trust your advisor? If not, why not? Can the relationship be improved or repaired? What information would you need to make sense of the advice you received?" 3. "It’s your professional’s job to make sense of the advice they’re giving you and to put you in a position where you could be comfortable taking that advice."
