This weekend I was privileged to join the Portfolio Careers workshop organised by Rizwan Malik. A first of its kind event with inspiring speakers and an inspiring audience. People shared insightful experiences, with a focus on their drivers and passion. They shared some of their “lows” and “challenges” they have overcome to build a happier/fulfilled career journey. ☘ Some of my reflections: - Some of the skills needed to build a portfolio career: 1) Communication, 2) Networking & relationships, 3) Know your value & make it visible.   - Professor Joe McDonald - There is always room to get five lines in the water. Get more special, learn new skills, network and get paid for it! - Sam Shah - It's ok not to have a linear career pathway, industry isn’t the dark side. Leverage your knowledge in other sectors and environments. - Professor Shafi Ahmed - Look for those who complement your skillset. Map your “why’s” and find your own ways to create impact. Value your time and recognise it because this will be important when finding and choosing the right opportunities. - Nikki Dowlman – For some, it may work not to plan, but for others, adequate planning is key. A Health Tech Company is looking for people who can define problems rather than solutions. I loved the quote from Ford: "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."   - Darren Stephens – Define and communicate your value, believe in the power of networking and find allies. - Sarim Ather – to commercialise an idea, find the right partners and networks. - Dr Amrita Kumar – You don’t need to leave the NHS to pursue innovation. Know what your needs are and look for the role / challenge that suit you. For every success you know of, remember there are many “No’s” - the “eventual yes” is what matters. - Rizwan Malik – “The world is open if you allow it to be opened to you”. Know your value. Innovation is possible and the networks you build will help you thrive. - Most of the audience was clinical, it’s always fascinating to engage and understand more of their context, situation, and draw on their expertise to improve #digitalhealth solutions. #engagement with people from diverse backgrounds is key to have a rounded understanding of the problems we are trying to solve in healthcare. This worksho is part of the journey I have embarked to engage with friends from clinical and commercial backgrounds.   🚀 Rizwan Malik many thanks for this amazing workshop.
