October 1 – 7 is Mental Health Awareness Week, a week when mental health advocates across the country unite to raise awareness, fight discrimination, and provide support.   Today and every day, we want to remind all caregivers how important it is to take care of themselves first. Neglecting one’s own health can negatively affect their ability to care for others. By adding self-care activities into their routine, not only can caregivers better their own physical and mental health, but they will also be improving the level of care they can provide to a loved one, ensuring that they can always show up for those who rely on them – including themself!   “Caregivers will often express feelings of guilt when talking about taking time for themselves. Remember, self-care is a very unselfish act. In our October issue, Elizabeth Colvin chief executive officer at Single2do, shares important lessons she’s learned as a mental health caregiver. 💖 Love's power lies in prioritizing others. Medication and therapy are vital, but addressing guilt, shame, and denial is equally essential. Understanding the mind and fighting stigma are key. 🌈 Success varies for every individual living with mental illness. Education is the starting point. Listening, offering suggestions, and facilitating communication are crucial. 🤝 What's beneficial for sufferers is beneficial for the community. After symptom management, social settings can be challenging.
