•Proposal for the Restoration of Rural Houses in the Historical Fabric of Isfahan

This is a really important decision by the Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek. Toondah Harbour is an internationally imporant Moreton Bay Ramsar listed wetlands. It is home to endangered and migratory birds and other wildlife. It is an ecosystem that provides critical "ecosystem services" to the humans that live adjacent to it, including an important natural buffer to climate impacts. It has taken ten long years and over a 100,000 people signing petitions, taking part in rallies, writing, turning up, to reach this point. It is a testament to some fairly dubious decision making (the manner in which it was initiated, the business case and ecological foundation has come under serious and deserved criticism). It should never have gotten this far. We do need housing, but need to build up not out. We need to use already degraded land, not bulldoze precious habitat. I hope this decision is confirmed in ten days. And then we need to look at stronger environmental and planning laws. Communities shouldn't be wasting blood and treasure defending terrible, exploitative development proposals. Clearer, stronger environment and planning laws are needed for our communities, and developers alike. So we can protect our priceless ecosystems with "no go" zones and speed up housing and development in areas where it is most appropriate, in "go" zones. Greater transparency and a fair playing field for all developers, and not back door deals for those with more power and influence. That's how we get the system to work better for all.

The #Birrarung Council released their second annual report last year - rather quietly. One of the successes of the council has been working out how to work with Traditional Owners as sovereign partners on the Council. It’s been a process. And it has been easier said than done perhaps, there are assumptions that need to be teased out and looked at in the light of day. The Yarning Circles highlighted in this last report has been one of those successes. That way it is described in the report does not make the circles read as being particularly unique. Talking sticks have been used before say. What is unique is the imprimatur that Traditional Owners bring to the process, that brings the CEOs and senior managers along, and the shift in the approach from presentation followed by questions to a joint exploration - with the senior staff of an agency or organization being present and being engaged. That’s how I understand. It is powerful to pull the CEO in - an necessary. There are a few days left for the public to submit feedback on the ACHP’s updated draft Exemption for Indigenous Knowledge-Informed Activities by Native Hawaiian Organizations. This action proposes to exempt from historic preservation review under Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act certain restoration, rehabilitation, preservation, and reconstruction activities that are carried out, permitted, or funded by federal agencies and proposed, directed, authorized, or supported by NHOs. The Exemption would cover the types of preservation activities that are encouraged by the National Historic Preservation Act, including: traditional landscaping practices and agricultural activities, restoration of water features, restoration of sacred and traditional sites, installation of interpretive signage, and the reconstruction or restoration of traditional and cultural Native Hawaiian buildings and structures.
