The European Commission and the upcoming Belgian Council Presidency have outlined their legislative priorities for the first half of 2024. Focus is on concluding the remaining files from the Fit-for-55 package and initiatives arising from the 2022 energy crisis. The Commission will continue to implement the European Green Deal and evaluate the governance regulation for energy and climate obligations. Meanwhile, Belgium plans to advance socially equitable green transition by finalising around 10 energy-related legislative pieces. The 2040 climate target, crucial for connecting 2030 and 2050 goals, will be addressed in a ‘communication’ and an impact assessment, but the actual legislative proposal is not expected before 2025. This will impact EU carbon market dynamics and climate policy post-2030. 🗞 Bellona’s reaction to the European Elections! 🗳️Today marks a new cycle for European politics: around 147 millions of EU citizens cast their votes and elected the new European Parliament. Representatives with a more sceptical approach towards climate policy have gained more seats compared to the past legislature, which will make it more challenging to design ambitious climate policy. The next European cycle needs to better emphasise the broader societal benefits of ambitious and well-designed climate action. 📢 “Despite reports of backlash against climate policies and a rise of climate sceptical EU representatives, the outcome of these European elections shows that the next European Parliament will be formed in majority by supporters of the Green Deal. The next European Parliament will have the responsibility to act together in reaching the net-zero objective for the benefit of both its industries and its citizens” – Francesco Lombardi Stocchetti, Policy Advisor on Sustainable Finance & Economy 🌍 Europe must move beyond viewing the green transition as an ideological battle and start implementing decisive climate policies. 🗳️ Ready to have an Impact? The EU Elections are at hand, and you can make a difference by voting and ensuring your voice is heard! 🌍 One of the key messages of CEMR’s Call to Action is to build active subsidiarity and strong multi-level governance cooperation. Collaboration and coordination across and between levels of government are essential to deliver public services that effectively respond to people’s needs and for Europe’s ability to properly respond to future crises. EU policy and decision-makers must cooperate with Local and Regional Governments (LRGs) on how best to achieve the ambitious EU objectives including climate, energy, and sustainable industry ensuring subnational challenges and needs are properly addressed. 🌳 Vote to make an impact on climate, the environment and our habitat. #BetheImpact 🚀 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/e5F5ydig #VoteforTomorrow #UseYourVote #EUelections #ClimateAction #Sustainability 🌿🌐
