"I felt like few people in the sustainable-fashion-as-usual universe understood or even saw our burden: that factory owners and factory managers are being asked to reinvent their entire businesses and operating contexts — for free — all whilst implicitly being labeled the problem." Kim van der Weerd In Kim van der Weerd's latest article, she unpacks the biases and structures that underpin the fashion sector's approach to sustainability with thoughtful precision. There's a lot that resonated with me within this article. Too often the suite of sustainability tools and strategies being used are only focused on ensuring entities are "compliant" and "accountable", rather than understanding the constraints that can lead (or often compel) suppliers to make less sustainable choices. Van der Weerd examines how this misplaced scrutiny on supplier intention is not only "dehumanizing", but also fails to consider the constraints imposed by an inequitable distribution of financial risk and reward within the supply chain. Highly recommend giving it a read!

I Passionate Sustainability Student 👩🏻💻 | Dedicated to Driving Positive Environmental Change 🌲 | Seeking Opportunities in Sustainable Development🌱
🌿📰 Excited to share this thought-provoking article on sustainable fashion! As someone passionate about sustainability, I believe it's crucial to address the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry. This article discusses common myths about sustainable fashion design. Here’s the summary of the article: “ Few industries tout their sustainability credentials more forcefully than the fashion industry. But the sad truth is that despite high-profile attempts at innovation, it’s failed to reduce its planetary impact in the past 25 years. Most items are still produced using non-biodegradable petroleum-based synthetics and end up in a landfill. So what can be done? New ESG strategies such as the use of bio-based materials, recycling, and “rent-the-runway” concepts have failed. Instead, we must stop thinking about sustainability as existing on a spectrum. Less unstainable is not sustainable. And governments need to step in to force companies to pay for their negative impact on the planet. The idea of “win-win” and market-based solutions has failed even in one of the most “progressive” industries.” Check out the article here: [https://lnkd.in/dNVDriUE] #SustainableFashion #CircularEconomy #EthicalFashion 🌍👗

Consultant of economical exhaust air purification solutions, specializing in the textile, plastics and rubber industries.
“"Sustainable" has increasingly become a runaway train with greenwashed carriages trailing behind it: In my experience, greenwashing is often the result of well-intended but misinformed initiatives.” 💯 I couldn’t agree more with Adam Taubenfligel’s latest article in Forbes Magazine “Sustainable Fashion As Oxymoron”. His article highlights that the concept of sustainability, especially in the fashion and textile industry, has been overall compromised and words like “responsible” would more accurately describe the practices brands should undertake in order to commit to a more environmentally friendly fashion and textile industry. Every little helps, and as long as the intentions are genuine, informed and future-proof, the industry will step by step move in the right direction of a greener future. Of course, a change to green cannot come fast enough, but it is pivotal to create a robust and stringent principle to adhere to rather than succumbing to the marketing hype surrounding sustainability. ☘ Full article in comments 👇👇👇:

Are brands keeping pace with their decarbonization commitments? 💬 Wonderful to see McKinsey & Company shine a light on both the challenges and opportunities to meaningfully tackle—and accelerate!—sustainability in fashion, and in particular highlight that there are affordable, even value-accretive opportunities to do so. 🌏 McKinsey aptly calls out the top challenge inhibiting progress: “brands struggle to make sustainability a core priority when times are tough”. AND, its mitigation: “create commercial value from your sustainability strides”, calling out circular business models as a key way to do so (we agree! ♻). What are the biggest challenges—and mitigations!—you’ve found shepherding your business on its sustainability journey? The major peril of publishing a big report is that stuff keeps on happening even after you've "gone to press" - and that's definitely the case with sustainability this week 🌿 🗞️ From industry bodies to legislators, things are moving a lot more quickly than I suspect a lot of the industry is prepared for - and certainly quicker than the self-congratulatory culture around fairly narrow sustainability initiatives can evolve. Some thoughts and analysis in our roundup of this week's fashion technology news: interli.net/3rynsvg Or check out The Sustainability Report 2023 if you haven't already: https://lnkd.in/eH595zJP #sustainablefashion #fashiontechnology
