I jotted down some great insights from a trade show I visited this week. People buy from People. So here's how to find the next hot lead. General Behaviour : > if approached, look busy - ideally on your phone/laptop or hide > if approached (time permitting), leave your stand to take 'faux call' Dress code : > dress to blend in. no colourful clothing > wacky socks recommended > suits, but replace tie with lanyard to give 'relaxed' feel > slightly more perfume/musk than you think necessary Recommended Body language : > crossed arms > eyes down > keep it unapproachable Engagement tactics (on stand) > mega bowl of free Tic Tacs (unboxed/mixed flavours) > spin the wheel with prizes > free branded pen for every email address exchanged > unnecessary free branded water bottle > yet another tote I'm Pete. Follow me for insight, and learnings. #TradeShow #FreeTicTacs

It's summer solstice time 🌻 🌞 and we thought we would capture an unboxing of this beautiful product by a brand we find inspiring; Ffern - they are a natural fragrance maker based in Somerset with a simple vision: to restore perfumery to its artisan roots. Here's why we are captivated; Each season, at solstice or equinox they make one bottle of fragrance for each person on their ledger. So personal. As well as a clear purpose, the problem they are solving and their brand values are present online. Their website eloquently explains: The industry is dominated by a handful of cosmetics giants who own multiple brands, and mass manufacture their fragrance on a global scale. Carefully sourced natural ingredients and independent artistic expression have been abandoned in favour of cheap chemicals and market forces. Every touchpoint has been considered, from the memorable experience in their shop shop engaging online presence and stylish and intriguing promotional films, to their commissioned artwork and collaborations. The bottle, the box, the batch card with a seal of authenticity, the little fragrance notes, the hand made diffusion stones. In the interest of no waste, they send you a tiny sample, so you can test out the fragrance and if this isn't your cup of tea you simply return the box unopened. Talking of tea, you even get a little, locally sourced seasonal tea bag! Delightful. We love the organic, sustainably sourced ethos which isn't just fluff, they seem to live their purpose and follow through on their promise and there is such a raw honesty and passion to what they do - and of course it smells incredible. Such a treat. 🌿 #Unboxing #SummerSolstice #NaturalFragrance #ArtisanPerfume #SustainableLiving

My mom threw out my Dad's favorite sweater. In the 80's, his sweater was peak "Rad". Fast forward to 2020's, and the leather accents, thick cotton, and "vintage" look don't quite hold up. Don't get me wrong - it still did the job - comfortable and warm. But my mom knew it was so out... and out to the trash. With many legacy investments, there are plenty of positions that may get the job done but are just not the best way moving forward. Could be internal costs, asset allocation, or just a company that doesn't have a lot more future potential. HOWEVER - you can't just sell them in a brokerage account without realizing all of those massive gains you have. Time has really worked in your favor for everything except the capital gains taxes due on a $200,000 position you paid $180 for in 1973. (Potentially $39,964 in just taxes for selling it). If your portfolio is over $2M, those taxes can really stack up. So, if you inherit these positions, you may feel a little cold to the idea of selling them. Fear not! "Step Up in Cost Basis" is here to save the day! When you inherit positions that have huge gains, your new cost basis re-sets at the date of passing. So for that $200,000 position - once you inherit it, your cost is now $200,000. If you sell it for $200,000 to change positions, you have $0 of taxes due. Now you can buy yourself a new wardrobe that doesn't qualify for an ugly sweater trophy.

Our perception of something new is heavily influenced by what we've previously observed! This is called the Contrast Principle. In a well-known psychological experiment, researchers asked subjects to rate the sweetness of various fruit juices. When these juices were tasted after drinking plain water, they were perceived as delightfully sweet. However, when the same juices were tasted after a sweet fruit punch, their sweetness ratings dropped significantly. The contrast in sweetness altered the subjects' perception. Many marketers leverage this on consumers’ psychology. By displaying premium items next to affordable ones, the affordable option looks like a relative bargain and drives sales. Suppose a customer enters a high-end men's clothing store wanting to buy a suit and a sweater. If you were the salesperson, which item would you show him first to get him to spend the most money? Retailers train staff to show the most expensive option first! Common sense might say the opposite - if someone just dropped big bucks on a pricey suit, they may hesitate to spend much more right after on a sweater. But the contrast principle suggests otherwise. Present the expensive suit FIRST! When the customer then looks at sweaters, even pricey ones, her cost won't seem as high in comparison to the suit she just bought. She might have protested spending Rs. 2500 on a sweater initially. But after buying a Rs. 7500 suit, a Rs. 2500 sweater suddenly seems reasonable. Showing inexpensive products first makes expensive ones seem even pricier by contrast - not ideal when you want customers to spend more! #ContrastPrinciple #ConsumerPsychology

Here's what you can do to manage #sweating during a presentation and minimize its impact on the #audience: Dress strategically: Opt for natural, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Looser clothing can also help with air circulation. Avoid triggers: If you know certain foods or drinks make you sweat more, avoid them before your #presentation. Carry #antiperspirant wipes: A quick swipe in a private restroom can help manage sweat, especially in areas like your palms and underarms. Subtle movements: Shift your weight or take a small step back to create airflow and potentially evaporate some sweat. Use props strategically: Hold papers or a pointer in front of sweaty palms.
