Born and raised in Belfast, Sarah Kennedy discovered her passion for spirits while studying at Ulster University and working in hospitality. Her love for Irish Whiskey and Belfast led her to become McConnell’s Irish Whisky brand ambassador. In just a year, she has delved into McConnell’s rich history and the booming Irish Whiskey market, cementing her role in an industry she's deeply passionate about. Glamour: What sparked your interest in Whiskey? Sarah: During my studies at university I worked in the hospitality industry, I was lucky to have staff training from some local and international brands, this was the beginning of my passion for Whiskey. My father was also a fan of Irish whiskey and had deep appreciation for the complex flavours of different age statements and cask finished whiskey. I enjoyed some great conversations with him on flavour profiles. Glamour: As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, what challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them in your role as global ambassador for McConnell's Irish Whisky? Sarah: One of the main challenges has been overcoming preconceived notions that as a woman it is surprising that I drink and enjoy whiskey. To overcome this, I’ve focused on building my expertise, continuously educating myself, and demonstrating my knowledge and passion. I’ve also sought out advice and support from industry friends and other brand advocates, both male and female, which has been invaluable in navigating and succeeding in this space. As my knowledge grows so does my confidence in communicating. Glamour: Have you noticed any shifts or improvements in gender diversity within the whiskey industry during your career? If so, what do you attribute these changes to? Sarah: Absolutely, I have worked in the industry for 4 years now and in that short space of time there have been significant improvements in gender diversity. This has been helped by the increased awareness and advocacy for inclusivity, as well as the efforts of influential women who have worked hard to pave the way. Industry organisations and brands are now more actively promoting diversity and creating opportunities for women to thrive in various roles. For example, in our distillery we have diversity across all functions in Distilling, Export, Hospitality and Marketing. Glamour: Looking ahead, what are your personal goals or aspirations within the whiskey industry, and how do you plan to achieve them? Sarah: My Goal is to progress my current role further in marketing, my passion is building brand awareness through the creation of new products, building advocacy in consumers, and expanding our brand into new markets such as South Africa. I would also like to contribute to the changing trends and demographics in the Irish Whiskey industry.

In addition to production for global brands, there is an increasing focus on Portuguese brands. Portuguese Flannel from Porto is one such brand with a heritage and story in the premium segment. 🇵🇹 Porthos: Canned fish is an iconic product category in Portugal. Have you ever heard "you must think you are the last Coca-cola in the desert"? When in 2022 I visited the Sahara desert in Tunisia, I was surprised to see that there is, indeed, Coca-Cola in the middle of the desert! After climbing up and down with 40 degrees hitting my back, there it was: a local guy selling Coca-Cola. Today at the course I'm doing we talked about the power of a brand. And Coca-Cola is one of the most powerful brands in the world. A product can be revolutionary or the most basic product, but when the brand becomes the product, that is brand awareness at its finest. Everybody knows Coca-Cola. Everybody asks for a Coca-Cola to, sometimes, listen to "can it be Pepsi?". And even if we do not drink it or love the taste, we are aware of it. Coca-Cola is not only a product: it's a brand. It's the happiness that their adds always make you feel, it's the solidarity fairs at Christmas, it's the emotions they bring out in you. They made sure to build a brand around the product and develop important branding strategies to make sure they are a global success. This is the power of a brand. “Conviviality is being able to be who you are and being able to connect”   In his role as Global Head of Culture and Brand Partnerships, Maxime H. oversees Absolut Vodka’s collaborations. Based in London, we caught up with him to get some insight into his career with us.     ❓How does the idea of conviviality manifest itself in the work environment at TAG? It means always reaching out to each other. My Global Head of Culture role is a ‘one-man gig’ so I need to be able to reach out to people and talk to them. I have always been an openly gay man at work and I have never had a problem here or when I worked for Pernod Ricard. I know a lot of people who come into this company initially wonder whether they can be open or not. But they soon discover they can. Conviviality isn’t about looking for acceptance. It’s just about being able to be who you are, being open to differences and being able to connect. ❓ Can you tell us about an exciting project you have worked on recently? I loved the Heinz pasta sauce collaboration we did in 2023 because it was fast paced. It was pure FMCG style so it was a learning curve for us all, which I found fascinating. The culture and corporate clash were real for everyone; for them, for us and me every day as our industries and processes are so different. I really enjoyed it; Heinz was a great partner to work with. I learned so much from another industry that I can now use to benefit the Absolut brand.   ❓What has been your proudest moment at TAG? Working on our #SexResponsbily campaign in the US in early 2020, which shone a light on sexual consent. I'm very proud of this one because it's a brand not being afraid to have a point of view on controversial and important issues. This is exactly what brands should be doing – recognising they have a role in commenting on social matters – but very few do. The campaign had added strength because we were pushing our view on consent at the height of #MeToo.   ❓ What's your favourite cocktail? My favourite is not actually a vodka cocktail. It's a negroni with Monkey 47 gin. I’m a huge Monkey 47 fan, which is a fantastic product and has a fantastic story. If I had to go for a vodka cocktail, I would go for a vodka soda with Absolut Citron and a wedge of lemon. It would be as simple as that!

I was in Alcobev industry for ~7 Years. My sense is, the the first company to start working towards creating a premium category in India would be Pernod. Majority of Indian companies were concentrating only on volume and hence used to sell more of economy brands. Then, Diageo entered India market by acquiring majority stake in USL during 2014-15 and the sales of premium brands started gaining traction. Competition started heating up between Diageo and Pernod which also attracted many players into India as well as made the existing players to pump more money into the premium segment. This helped companies to attract more customers especially the young generation as well as improvising their margin. #alcobev #premiumspirits
