How often do you shake up your organization's thinking and do things outside the box? On the (world's) biggest stage? The recent Olympic Games challenged long held traditions and notions of possibility. Take for example: 🔥 Having an Olympic cauldron that had no flame! 🚤 An opening ceremony held not in a stadium--but on a river! 🏊🏼 Swimming in that same river in which it hadn't been legal to swim in for over a century! 👫 Achieving gender parity for the first time ever! What level of creativity, perspective, determination, and courage does it take to break these barriers? To see things differently and achieve different--extraordinary--results. This reminds me of our Vistage meetings where we do exactly this for our members. Through sharing, challenge, and accountability we see things differently. Thanks Jim Ristuccia! First and very apropos for Paris: It’s not the recipe. It’s the chef.   It’s what #LeeThayer addressed in his almost 50 years of working with Visage Chairs and members. Here are some of the takeaways I learned by being one of those TEC/Vistage Chairs for 34 years.   Challenge Conventional Thinking: Sometimes, the usual way of approaching a problem might not be the best way. It's important to question why you're doing something the way you are and consider alternative approaches. (See Lee's Leadership: Thinking, Being, Doing)   Start Fresh: When stuck, starting from scratch and thinking about what you want to achieve can be helpful rather than getting stuck just trying to fix what’s broken.   Avoid Mental Traps: People often fall into the trap of sticking with familiar methods, especially if they've worked before. While I strongly support inclusivity in all areas of life, I can't help but question whether this situation was fair to all athletes involved. Promoting equality is crucial, but where should we draw the line to ensure fair competition? This isn’t the first time such a scenario has sparked debate. Previous instances, like the case of Laurel Hubbard in weightlifting, and Lia Thomas in swimming, have also raised questions about how to balance inclusivity with fair competition. 🌟 Inclusivity is vital in ensuring everyone has the opportunity to compete and thrive in sports.
