#CommercialDeterminantsOfHealth In the #Philippines, one consolidated company (part of a larger diversified conglomerate) is a key commercial determinant of health, particularly of #NCDs - a company selling both #alcohol and #ultraprocessedfoods. The company's beer and gin portfolios remain one of the most profitable. It is worrisome that a company selling health harmful products is considered part of the Filipino identity. #SystemsThinking While we need to consider the full picture of how such products (e.g., ultra-processed foods) are often the most affordable, and most accessible to low-income households, and how such products (e.g., alcohol) become more affordable and more attractive (to show social status) to the growing middle class in the Philippines (mostly OFW families), the impact of a company's #marketing practices should not be underestimated. This is further enabled by a legal environment that does not regulate marketing with statutory policies especially for alcohol, and a political elite that considers the economic elite a partner in sustainable development (considering the consistent policy proposals from Congress for the government to institutionalize, incentivize and reward #CSR).
