As a leader of an organization or a team, do you sometimes feel like you need to be a superhero? Well, you don’t. When the world shut down for COVID, I got on Zoom calls with CEOs and their leadership teams, and the CEOs often acted as if they were doing fine. Everything was great with the business and with their personal life. Why? They wanted to give people confidence that everything was going to be okay. “Don't worry, things are going to be fine. “ But that sends a message to others that they should be fine as well. “The CEO says we ought to be fine, so everything should be fine - don’t complain.“ If the leader isn’t vulnerable and honest, their team members are not going to risk being vulnerable either. Secondly, when you bottle those things up inside as a leader, it adds incredible stress. You feel like you need to be different on the outside from who you are on the inside. That’s inauthentic - and extremely unsettling. When we find ourselves doing that consistently in our work, we fall out of love with our business. When we’re not afraid to be vulnerable, we fall back in love with your business. And our teams fall back in love with us. You don’t need to show up on a zoom call curled up and crying in the fetal position. But you do need to be open and honest about how you're feeling, acknowledging where you screwed up and where you need help. Align who you are on the OUTSIDE with who you are on the INSIDE, be authentic and you’ll fall back in love with our business.
