With a landmark Scottish rocket launch on the horizon, this £20 million in government funding will help fund the construction and launch of Orbex’s Prime rocket - the first orbital rocket manufactured and launched from British soil - paving the way for the UK to emerge as a European leader in the space sector. 🚀 🛰️   Prime is set to launch from SaxaVord Spaceport from late 2025. 🚀   Our CEO, Paul Bate, said:   “Space is a fast-growing global industry and there is a real opportunity for the UK to play a greater role now than ever before. We’re awarding £20 million investment in Orbex’s Prime rocket to launch from the SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland. This ground-breaking project will be the first UK-manufactured and launched orbital rocket, and will boost our position as an European space leader, generating economic growth and creating jobs. Orbex’s Prime rocket will carry satellites into polar orbits, and be powered by renewable bio-propane fuel, setting a new standard for sustainable space tech. The UK is already a major satellite player, with Glasgow building more satellites than any other city in Europe. 🌌 European Space Agency - ESA has opened a new center in Vienna, named the Austrian ‘Phi-Lab’. This initiative is part of ESA's ScaleUp program to foster innovation in space hardware design and manufacturing. Key Highlights: 🔹Innovation Focus: The Phi-Lab will accelerate the development of space manufacturing, including rapid prototyping and production of spacecraft and satellites. 🔹Collaborative Efforts: It welcomes Austrian companies, European partners, universities, and research centers to collaborate on groundbreaking projects. 🔹Funding and Support: A call for ideas will be issued soon, with the first projects to receive seed funding in June. Are you sometimes wondering what’s out there, in space? We don’t know for sure and yet, we stay curious, and that is why Swissnex in India is excited to launch the Indo-Swiss SpaceWeek this Sunday. Together with our partner ESA BIC Switzerland, we are bringing a seven-member Swiss delegation to Bengaluru and New Delhi between 23rd and 28th June to explore the Indian space ecosystem and strengthen spacetech collaboration. Why are we so excited about it? Because… … Switzerland is a space nation. Full stop. Whilst Switzerland does not have its own space program, it has significantly shaped space missions around the globe.  Swiss technology is everywhere in space: on Mars with the Europeans, the Americans or the Chinese; on the Moon with the Russians; part of satellites orbiting Jupiter; on comets or peering into the infinite. While only major missions like the CHEOPS space telescope, the comet hunter Rosetta or the solar observatory Solar Orbiter have been widely covered in the media, many other missions also incorporate Swiss technology. During the Indo-Swiss SpaceWeek, the delegation will interact with the Indian space industry from the public and private sectors and find ways to strengthen the ties between the two innovative countries. 🌍 We're back from an inspiring 2️⃣ days at the Earth Observation Commercialisation Forum on November 27-28, 2024, in KAP Frankfurt! This gathering of leading companies—from constellation builders to software innovators—unpacked the immense potential of Earth Observation! Targeted audience were CEOs, founders. Highlights included insighful comments from NASA's Chief Economist, Alex McDonald, and ESA's Director General, Josef Aschbacher. Key stakeholders like Jaroslav Toth from the European Investment Bank and Dusan Chrenek from the European Commission also shared their informative insights for EO investments. One of the most useful announcements was the collaborative effort between the European Investment Bank, ESA, and the European Commission, which aims to unlock funding ranging from €5 million to €20 million for TRL 8-9 projects. To qualify, companies need to have private capital and fall within company categories B or C, with a focus on projects that enhance defense capabilities. The matchmaking sessions were a highlight of the forum, providing a fantastic platform for companies to connect directly with private investors. We had the pleasure of engaging with private investors like Hugo Gonzalez, Lena Stache, Quentin Robert, @Christina Vogl-Susse, Eric Benoist, and @Jean-David Herld, all looking to support businesses that meet investment criteria. These include increased satellite activity and novel space capabilities such as satellite constellations, autonomous spacecraft, and commercial space destinations. Besides the fantastic progress achievements, these activities have led to a proliferation of space debris and to a space traffic increase raising prospects of orbital congestion and negative impacts on the quality of the dark sky. The rising spacecraft production and orbital launches are also raising the environmental footprint of the sector. No doubt space is critical to support the attainment of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, those activities might lead to a paradoxical situation whereby the use of space to support SDGs may become unsustainable from the perspective of both the Earth and space environment.
